Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the complicated relationship between frailty, perioperative complications, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in elderly patients (≥ 75 years old) undergoing lumbar spine fusion (LSF).
Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent LSF between March 2019 and December 2021 were recruited in this study. Frail patients (modified frailty index [mFI] score ≥ 2) were propensity score matched to nonfrail patients (mFI score 0-1) on the basis of age, sex, and the number of fused levels.

Background: Depression affects individuals across various ages but is of significance in the older surgical population due to its adverse impact on cognitive function, surgical recovery, and overall functional disability. This study aimed to determine the overall prevalence and trajectory of depression in older surgical patients preoperatively, and at 30-, 90- and 180-days postoperatively.
Method: This study is a prespecified sub-study and analysis of the Postoperative Functional Disability in Unrecognized Cognitive Impairment Study.

Background: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is the worldwide terminology system for measuring health and disability at both individual and population levels. However, the underlying challenges remain in achieving widespread adoption and implementation of ICF within healthcare contexts, including the unequal interval scale of the ICF Likert-type qualifier system ranging from 0 to 4, a lack of consensus on conceptualization and grading criteria of ICF items, and an excessive number of ICF items associated with each disease. The utilization of item response theory (IRT) for ICF studies demonstrated potential benefits in addressing these issues.
