Published: August 2010

A new phenylpropanoid (1), 12-O-caffeoyl-12-hydroxyldodecanoic acid, and a new chalcone (2), 3'-lavandulyl-4-methoxyl-2,2',4',6'-tetrahydroxylchalcone, together with eight known compounds including one chalcone (3), five flavanones (4-8) and two flavonols (9, 10), have been isolated from one of the osteoprotective fractions of Drynaria fortunei (Kunze) J. Sm., which is used as a folk medicine for the treatment of osteoporosis. All these compounds were found for the first time from the genus Drynaria. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis.

American Foundation for Chinese Medicine, New York, NY 10001, USA.

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterized by the absence of hormones and growth factor receptors. It is typically responsive to anthracycline/taxol-based conventional chemotherapy. However, major therapeutic limitations include systemic toxicity and acquired resistance to chemotherapeutics.

This study aimed to provide scientific data on the anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) effects of phenolic compounds from Drynariae Rhizoma (DR) extract using a multi-component approach. Screening of DR extracts, fractions, and the ten phenolic compounds isolated from DR against the key AD-related enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), β-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1), and monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) confirmed their significant inhibitory activities. The DR extract was confirmed to have BACE1-inhibitory activity, and the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions were found to inhibit all AD-related enzymes, including BACE1, AChE, BChE, and MAO-B.

Article Synopsis
  • Rhizoma Drynariae, a traditional Chinese medicine, is used for treating bone injuries, with total flavonoids identified as key therapeutic compounds.
  • This study aims to investigate the effects of total flavonoids from Rhizoma Drynariae on bone regeneration and understand the underlying mechanisms involved.
  • Results show that total flavonoids enhance bone repair in rats and promote the growth and differentiation of bone marrow stem cells by activating the TGF-β signaling pathway.

The Wenshenyang recipe (WSYR) has the effect of treating infertility, but the mechanisms underlying this activity have not been fully elucidated. In this study, network pharmacology and RNA sequencing were combined, with database-based "dry" experiments and transcriptome analysis-based "wet" experiments used conjointly to analyse the mechanism of WSYR in the treatment of infertility. In the dry analysis, 43 active compounds in WSYR and 44 therapeutic targets were obtained through a database search, 15 infertility pathways were significantly enriched, and key targets, such as ESR1, TP53, AKT1, IL-6, and IL-10 were identified.

Article Synopsis
  • Gu Sui Bu (GSB), derived from the rhizome of Drynaria fortunei, is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for fractures and osteoporosis, but its effectiveness against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) is not well established.
  • The study aimed to evaluate GSB's efficacy and mechanism for treating GIOP, which is common in the elderly and requires effective, safe treatments.
  • Results indicated that GSB significantly improved bone calcification in a zebrafish model of GIOP by enhancing osteoblast activity and inhibiting bone resorption, with naringin identified as a key active component.
