An imaging technique is developed for the controlled generation of multiple excitation nano-spots for far-field microscopy. The system point spread function (PSF) is obtained by interfering two counter-propagating extended depth-of-focus PSF (DoF-PSF), resulting in highly localized multiple excitation spots along the optical axis. The technique permits (1) simultaneous excitation of multiple planes in the specimen; (2) control of the number of spots by confocal detection; and (3) overcoming the point-by-point based excitation. Fluorescence detection from the excitation spots can be efficiently achieved by Z-scanning the detector/pinhole assembly. The technique complements most of the bioimaging techniques and may find potential application in high resolution fluorescence microscopy and nanoscale imaging.

Biological applications using multiphoton microscopy increasingly seek a larger field of view while maintaining sufficient temporal sampling to observe dynamic biological processes. Multiphoton imaging also requires high numerical aperture microscope objectives to realize efficient non-linear excitation and collection of fluorescence. This combination of low-magnification and high-numerical aperture poses a challenge for system design.

The emergence of carrier coherence in MPS is a fascinating topic in coherently controlling the nonlinear effect (or other novel phenomena). Herein, we systematically investigated the third-order nonlinear optical responses of MPS (M = Ni, Fe, Mn) flake suspensions based on spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) effect.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are environmentally persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic pollutants. However, thorough degradation of PFAS remains exceptionally difficult due to the high dissociation energy of the C-F bond. Here, we report a viable strategy to markedly degrade PFAS completely by capitalizing on a harmless polytetrafluoroetylene (PTFE) as a piezocatalyst.

Given a number of data sets for evaluating the performance of single reference methods for the low-lying excited states of closed-shell molecules, a comprehensive data set for assessing the performance of multireference methods for the low-lying excited states of open-shell systems is still lacking. For this reason, we propose an extension (QUEST#4X) of the radical subset of QUEST#4 ( , , 3720) to cover 110 doublet and 39 quartet excited states. Near-exact results obtained by iterative configuration interaction with selection and second-order perturbation correction (iCIPT2) are taken as benchmark to calibrate static-dynamic-static configuration interaction (SDSCI) and static-dynamic-static second-order perturbation theory (SDSPT2), which are minimal MRCI and CI-like perturbation theory, respectively.

Nowadays, benzimidazole and its derivatives are widely assembled into multifunctional materials with various properties such as mechanochromism, photochromism, thermochromism and electrochromism. Herein, two novel zinc(II) coordination compounds, [Zn(L)Br]·2HO (1) and [Zn(L)Cl]·2HO (2) (L = tetra(1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)ethene), have been constructed one-pot facile synthesis from bis(1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)methane (L) and zinc(II) salts. The ligand L with a CC double bond was formed by C-C coupling of two sp-C atoms of L in solvothermal synthesis, which provides a new strategy to generate the conjugation system conveniently.
