Growth Superiority and Genetic Characterization of the Hybrid from Female Ussuri Catfish () and Male Longsnout Catfish ().

Animals (Basel)

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology, Hubei Hongshan Laboratory, The Innovation Academy of Seed Design, Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan 430072, China.

Crossbreeding is a traditional breeding technique and has been performed successfully in many fish species. However, distant hybridization between different genera is hard to be successful because of reproductive isolation. In this study, diploid hybrids (PL) were successfully derived from the hybridization of Ussuri catfish (, PU, ♀, 2n = 52) and longsnout catfish (, LL, ♂, 2n = 52).

Constructing age-structured matrix population models for all fishes.

PeerJ

January 2025

Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, United States of America.

Matrix population models are essential tools in conservation biology, offering key metrics to guide species management and conservation planning. However, the development of these models is often limited by insufficient life history data, particularly for non-charismatic species. This study addresses this gap by using life history data from FishBase and the FishLife R package, complemented by size-dependent natural mortality estimates, to parameterize age-structured matrix population models applicable to most fish species.

In contrast to adult mammalian hearts, the adult zebrafish heart efficiently replaces cardiomyocytes lost after injury. Here we reveal shared and species-specific injury response pathways and a correlation between Hmga1, an architectural non-histone protein, and regenerative capacity, as Hmga1 is required and sufficient to induce cardiomyocyte proliferation and required for heart regeneration. In addition, Hmga1 was shown to reactivate developmentally silenced genes, likely through modulation of H3K27me3 levels, poising them for a pro-regenerative gene program.

Germinative dynamic, seasonality, and polyandry: A dive in neotropical point-belly frog reproduction.

Department of Structural and Functional Biology, Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho", São Paulo, Brazil.

Complexity and reproductive plasticity are very well-known characteristics of anurans. The group is being continuously explored taxonomically and phylogenetically, which leads to a great potential diversity not yet uncovered. This is particularly evident due to the lack of investigation regarding species-specific traits, even the ones well distributed in the lineages as polyandry.

Studies of in situ plant response and adaptation to complex environmental stresses, are crucial for understanding the mechanisms of formation and functioning of ecosystems of anthropogenically transformed habitats. We study short- and long-term responses of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) and anti-oxidant capacity to complex abiotic stresses of common plants Calamagrostis epigejos and Solidago gigantea in semi-natural (C) and heavy metal contaminated habitats (LZ). We found significant differences in leaf pigment content between both plant species growing on LZ plots and their respective C populations.
