The pregnancy rate per transfer does not appear to be increased if the embryos are placed in the Fallopian tube rather than using in-vitro fertilization or inserting the gametes into the tubule ampulla. Consequently, the indications are specific to particular cases.

Assessment of the uterus with three-dimensional ultrasound in women undergoing ART.

Hum Reprod Update

March 2017

Assisted Reproductive Technology Unit, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Prince of Wales Hospital, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, New Territories, Shatin, Hong Kong.

Background: A detailed assessment of the uterus forms a pivotal part of the ART treatment process. The emergence of three-dimensional ultrasound (3D US) has provided clinicians with a highly powerful tool in this respect. Assessments with 3D US range from the reconstruction of anatomical planes elusive to conventional US, to the objective measurement of anatomical volumes and vascularization parameters.

Study Question: Does hysteroscopic proximal tubal occlusion by intratubal devices as a treatment for hydrosalpinges result in comparable ongoing pregnancy rates following IVF/ICSI when compared with laparoscopic salpingectomy?

Summary Answer: Hysteroscopic proximal tubal occlusion by intratubal devices is inferior to laparoscopic salpingectomy in the treatment of hydrosalpinges in women undergoing IVF/ICSI with respect to ongoing pregnancy rates.

What Is Known Already: It is known that women with hydrosalpinges undergoing IVF have poorer pregnancy outcomes compared with women with other forms of tubal infertility. In these women, both laparoscopic salpingectomy and laparoscopic proximal tubal ligation are known to improve IVF outcomes.

This was a retrospective review of all pregnancies reported after Essure in situ in the Netherlands. Pregnancies included those that were unintentional (resulting from lack of protocol adherence and/or misread confirmation tests) and those that were intentional (resulting from off-label use of Essure micro-inserts for hydrosalpinx closure before in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection with embryo transfer or in vitro fertilization with embryo transfer after regret of sterilization). The outcomes of 50 pregnancies in women with 1 or 2 micro-inserts in situ were evaluated.

Hysteroscopic hydrosalpinx occlusion with Essure device in IVF patients when salpingectomy or laparoscopy is contraindicated.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

July 2013

Human Reproduction Unity, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Hospital from Cruces, Basque Country University, Baracaldo, Vizcaya, Spain.

Objective: To evaluate, in patients with hydrosalpinges, the effect on in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcome of the insertion by hysteroscopy of an intratubal blocking device, in cases where laparoscopic salpingectomy or laparoscopy was contraindicated.

Study Design: A prospective interventional case series study was conducted in fifteen women with unilateral (N=6) or bilateral hydrosalpinges (N=9) submitted for IVF. In all of them, laparoscopic salpingectomy was contraindicated.

Are oocytes from the anestrous bitch competent for meiosis?

Reprod Domest Anim

December 2012

INRA, UMR 1198 Biologie du Développement et Reproduction, Domaine de Vilvert, Jouy-en-Josas, France.

In the bitch, oocyte meiosis resumption takes place in the oviduct. Using oocytes from anestrous bitches, in vitro maturation (IVM) generally gives very poor results. To investigate the contribution of oocyte competence to the low IVM yield, we compared in vivo maturation in an optimal environment with conventional IVM.
