Female eelpouts (Zoarces viviparus L.) are exposed during early pregnancy to nominal concentrations of 100 microg/L of 4-tert-octylphenol (OP) or 0.5 microg/L of 17beta-estradiol (E2). Effects on maternal metabolism and on liver and gonad development in embryos were examined and compared with controls (C) during exposure and after transfer to clean water (depuration). In the mother fish, significantly higher concentrations of plasma vitellogenin (vtg) and calcium were found in the two exposed groups, when compared with the C group after exposure and depuration. When compared, however, with the respective values after exposure, vtg had decreased significantly after depuration. The hepatosomatic index was normalized after depuration. In both exposed groups, the hepatocytes were rounded and not distinctly polygonal as in the controls. The amount of glycogen was considerably less while the number of mitochondria increased, and the rER significantly proliferated after exposure as well as after depuration. The gonads of nine of more than 28 embryos in the group treated with OP exhibited a number of abnormalities as compared with the normal gonad development in both sexes. Feminization of the male gonads in the exposed specimens and a number of histopathological features were observed in all the abnormal gonads, whereas reliable male features, such as formation of seminiferous tubules or spermioduct, were not observed. This study showed that 4t-tert-OP and 17beta-estradiol exert estrogenic effects during very early development of the embryos and that depuration had a positive effect on the motherfish and her embryos.

This study investigates a comprehensive enhancement strategy for photovoltaic (PV) panel efficiency, focusing on increasing electrical output through the integration of parabolic reflectors, advanced cooling mechanisms, and thermoelectric generation. Parabolic reflectors are implemented in the system to maximize solar irradiance on the PV panel's surface, while a specialized cooling system is introduced to regulate temperature distribution across the silicon layer. This cooling system consists of a finned duct filled with paraffin (RT35HC) and enhanced with SWCNT nanoparticles, which improve the thermal properties of the paraffin, facilitating more effective heat dissipation.

Proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) results were compared to explore the influence of the thermal dissolution process on the pyrolysis for PLC and ISP. Results showed that the thermal dissolution process mainly dissolved some light components of low-rank coal, and more phenols, aldehydes, esters and ethers were found in the SP, indicating that low-carbon alcohols can break the ether bridge bond in coal and generate oxygen-containing organic compounds (OCOCs).

Adaptive control of solar light based on an optical switching strategy is essential to tune thermal gain, while real-time solar regulation and hence on-demand thermal management coupled with dynamic conditions still faces a formidable challenge. Herein, we develop a stacking structure which is mechanosensitive and can be finely tuned depending on the dynamic cavitation effect. Specifically, the stacking structure transfers from a solid monolith state to porous layered state progressively under mechanical stretching, and the resulting porous layered state gradually goes back to the solid monolith state once the load is released.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution using inexhaustible clean solar energy is considered as a promising strategy. In order to build an efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production system to satisfy the demands of practical applications, it is of great significance to design photocatalysts that offer high activity, low cost, and high stability. Herein, a series of cheap CdS/Ni(OH) composite photocatalysts were designed and synthesized using the hydrothermal method.

Background: Camels, known as the enduring "ships of the desert," host a complex gut microbiota that plays a crucial role in their survival in extreme environments. However, amidst the fascinating discoveries about the camel gut microbiota, concerns about antibiotic resistance have emerged as a significant global challenge affecting both human and animal populations. Indeed, the continued use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine has led to the widespread emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which has worsened through gene transfer.
