AI Article Synopsis

  • * Factors like trauma, hygiene practices, and close contact increase athletes' risk of skin diseases, highlighting the need for awareness and quick response.
  • * The guidelines aim to equip certified athletic trainers and healthcare participants with vital information and strategies to effectively handle skin infections in athletic settings.

Article Abstract

Objective: To present recommendations for the prevention, education, and management of skin infections in athletes.

Background: Trauma, environmental factors, and infectious agents act together to continually attack the integrity of the skin. Close quarters combined with general poor hygiene practices make athletes particularly vulnerable to contracting skin diseases. An understanding of basic prophylactic measures, clinical features, and swift management of common skin diseases is essential for certified athletic trainers to aid in preventing the spread of infectious agents.

Recommendations: These guidelines are intended to provide relevant information on skin infections and to give specific recommendations for certified athletic trainers and others participating in athletic health care.

dna2bit: high performance genomic distance estimation software for microbial genome analysis.

Front Microbiol

December 2024

Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Contemporary Anthropology, Department of Anthropology and Human Genetics, School of Life Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

dna2bit is an ultra-fast software specifically engineered for microbial genome analysis, particularly adept at calculating genome distances within metagenome and single amplified genome datasets. Distinguished from existing software such as Mash and Dashing, dna2bit employs feature hashing technique and Hamming distance to achieve enhanced speed and memory utilization, without sacrifice in the accuracy of average nucleotide identity calculations. dna2bit has promising applications in various domains such as average nucleotide identity approximation, metagenomic sequence clustering, and homology querying.

After the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns over virus transmission have risen. A state of health emergency was declared in 2022 due to Clade 2 of the monkeypox (MPOX) virus. In August 2024, another emergency was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) because of the widespread Clade 1b, which caused a more severe and lethal disease.

Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) has previously been used as an umbrella term to describe a spectrum of hypocomplementemic glomerular diseases, which are rare causes of end stage kidney disease (ESKD). We present a 22-year-old man with a well-established medical history who had been complaining of 4 days of frothy dark urine, bilateral lower limb swelling, and puffiness on his face. For a month before his presentation, he had many bilateral skin lesions on his lower limbs that were leaking pus.

The stress-induced keratin intermediate filament gene/protein (K16) is spatially restricted to the suprabasal compartment of the epidermis and extensively used as a biomarker for psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis and other inflammatory disorders. However, its role in these conditions remains poorly defined. Here we show that K16 negatively regulates type-I interferon (IFN) signaling and innate immune responses.

Objectives: Chronic otitis media (COM) is a prevalent condition affecting auditory function. Ossiculoplasty is a known treatment strategy, but its effectiveness concerning the presence of cholesteatoma has not been extensively studied.

Methods: We conducted a multicentre study involving 153 patients diagnosed with COM without cholesteatoma (ncCOM) and with cholesteatoma (cCOM).
