Automated Parametrization Approach for Coarse-Graining Soil Organic Matter Molecules.

J Chem Theory Comput

University of Rostock, Institute of Physics, Albert-Einstein-Str. 23-24, D-18059 Rostock, Germany.

Investigating the molecular structure of soil organic matter (SOM), along with its intramolecular interactions and interactions with other soil components and xenobiotics, is essential due to its ecological importance. However, the complexity and heterogeneity of SOM present significant challenges for systematic studies. While experimental methods are commonly employed, atomistic simulations provide a complementary approach to exploring molecular-level processes.

Reverse saturation of absorption is a relatively rare phenomenon in light-matter interaction, as it requires a few conditions to be fulfilled. We observe that ruby exhibits a very strong reverse saturation of absorption at 473 nm. Furthermore, we measure the group velocity of a modulated laser beam in ruby and observe that the peaks of the pulses appear more than a hundred microseconds earlier than the reference signal.

Ultrafast Carrier and Lattice Cooling in TiCT MXene Thin Films.

Nano Lett

December 2024

Department of Chemistry and Centre for Processible Electronics, Imperial College London, London W12 0BZ, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • Metallic MXenes, like TiCT, show great potential in energy storage and electronics due to high electrical conductivity and light interaction.
  • Research utilized ultrafast laser spectroscopy to examine how quickly electrons and lattices cool down in TiCT thin films compared to other similar materials.
  • Findings reveal TiCT's fast cooling time (∼2.6 ps) without hot-phonon bottlenecks and slower heat dissipation over hundreds of nanoseconds, indicating challenges with heat transfer between flakes that could impact energy conversion applications.

Carbon nanotubes constitute an excellent option to connect molecular nanomagnets (MNMs) to solid-state devices, allowing the electrical control of the molecule spin state. The main challenge in this area is to obtain stable nanohybrid structures that preserve the magnetic properties and functionality of the molecule. One of the strategies developed to build these structures combining MNMs and carbon nanotubes involves the encapsulation of the nanotube within magnetic organic macrocycle(s), leading to magnetic mechanically interlocked derivatives of carbon nanotubes (mMINTs).

Implicit Solvent with Explicit Ions Generalized Born Model in Molecular Dynamics: Application to DNA.

The ion atmosphere surrounding highly charged biomolecules, such as nucleic acids, is crucial for their dynamics, structure, and interactions. Here, we develop an approach for the explicit treatment of ions within an implicit solvent framework suitable for atomistic simulations of biomolecules. The proposed implicit solvent/explicit ions model, GBION, is based on a modified generalized Born (GB) model; it includes separate, modified GB terms for solute-ion and ion-ion interactions.
