Salmonella osteomyelitis is seen most commonly in patients with sickle cell disease and in those with compromised immune systems. We report on the clinical, histological and imaging findings of salmonella osteomyelitis with intraosseous abscess formation occurring in a non-sickle cell patient receiving anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha therapy.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the commonest severe inherited disorders in the world. Infection accounts for a significant amount of the morbidity and mortality, particularly in sub- Saharan Africa, but is relatively poorly studied and characterized. Patients with SCD have significant immunodeficiency and are more likely to suffer severe and life-threatening complications of infection, and additionally infections can trigger complications of SCD itself.

Salmonella is a rare causative pathogen of osteomyelitis and is commonly detected in patients with sickle cell disease. We described 2 consecutive cases of nontyphoidal Salmonella osteomyelitis identified in immunocompetent children. It is evident that even children without apparent risk factors for immune dysfunctions can be affected, so maintaining clinical suspicion is crucial for early diagnosis and prompt treatment.
