Magnesium amidoborane monoammoniate (Mg(NH(2)BH(3))(2) x NH(3)) which crystallizes in a monoclinic structure (space group P2(1)/a) has been synthesized by reacting MgNH with NH(3)BH(3). Dihydrogen bonds are established between coordinated NH(3) and BH(3) of [NH(2)BH(3)](-) in the structure, promoting stoichiometric conversion of NH(3) to H(2).

Molecular magnesium hydrides and hydride-rich clusters are of significant interest for applications ranging from catalysis and small molecule activation to hydrogen storage. Here, we investigate the 2-anilidomethylpyridine framework L as an ancillary support for magnesium organometallics with a special emphasis on hydrides. The proligand L (-[2,6-bis(1-methylethyl)phenyl]-α,6-diphenyl-2-pyridinemethanamine) gives [(L)Mg(Bu)(thf)] () by butane elimination from Mg(Bu)(thf).

A combined synthetic and theoretical investigation of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) adducts of magnesium amidoboranes is presented, which involves a rare example of reversible migratory insertion within a normal valent s-block element. The reaction of (NHC)Mg(N(SiMe ) ) (1) and dimethylamine borane yields the tris(amide) adduct (NHC-BN)Mg(NMe BH )(N(SiMe ) ) (2; NHC-BN = NHC-BH NMe ). In addition to Me N=BH capture at the C-Mg bond, mechanistic investigations suggest the likelihood of aminoborane migratory insertion from an RMg(NMe BH NMe BH ) intermediate.

The β-diketiminato magnesium amidoboranes [HC{(Me)CNDipp}Mg(NMeBHNMe·BH)] and [HC{(t-Bu)CNDipp}Mg(NMe·BH)] are readily converted to the corresponding derivatives of the [HB(CF)] anion by treatment with B(CF). The bis(borohydride) derivatives of the heaviest alkaline-earth elements, strontium and barium, may be similarly synthesized by reaction of strontium or barium dimethylamidoboranes and B(CF) and by metathesis reactions of either SrI or BaI and 2 molar equiv of K(HB(CF)). The strontium and barium compounds have been fully characterized in solution and in the solid state as the respective tris(diethyl ether) and tetrakis(tetrahydrofuran) adducts.

Reactions of anilidoimine magnesium n-butyl and calcium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide derivatives with Me2NH·BH3 at 25 °C resulted in the isolation of complexes containing [NMe2BH2NMe2BH3](-) and [NMe2BH3](-) anions respectively. Although onward reaction of the calcium species at 30 °C with a further equivalent of Me2NH·BH3 provided ca. 90% conversion of the coordinated dimethylamidoborane anion to [NMe2BH2NMe2BH3](-), this process also resulted in significant (ca.

Reaction of PYR-(MgnBu)2, in which PYR is 2,6-[(DIPP)NC(Me)CHC(Me)N-]2-pyridine and DIPP is 2,6-iPr2-phenyl, with (DIPP)NH2BH3 gave PYR-[MgNH(DIPP)BH3]2 (56%) which was characterized by crystal structure determination. Addition of THF resulted in β-H elimination and formation of PYR-[MgNH(DIPP)BH3](MgH)·THF (57%), likewise characterized by crystal structure determination. Conversion of the second amidoborane anion in H(-) could not be achieved.
