We study the mitigation of Si nanocrystal (Si-nc) free carrier absorption (FCA) loss at telecom wavelengths in a concentric microdisk design. The concentric microdisk design relies on using the Si-nc emission as an optical pump for the surrounding Er-based lasing media without subjecting the lasing mode to the FCA loss present in the Si-ncs. We analyze the FCA loss as a function of overhang width in this design and show that for large enough overhang width the FCA loss is negligible. We also compute the FCA cross section from the FCA loss and number of excited Si-ncs, modeled by a four-level system, and show sigma(FCA)=1.08 +/- 2.3 x 10(-17) cm(2), which is in good agreement with reported cross sections for similar films.

Background: Cost-utility analyses commonly use two primary methods to value productivity: the human capital approach (HCA) and the friction cost approach (FCA). Another less frequently used method is the willingness-to-pay (WTP) approach, which estimates the monetary value individuals assign to avoiding an illness. In the context of foodborne illnesses (FBI), productivity loss represents one of the most significant economic impacts, particularly in developed nations.

Agroforestry intercropping is an effective way to optimize land use and ensure food security. However, the physiological mechanism by which the shading of dominant plants inhibits the yield of non-dominant plants in this mode remains to be investigated. A two-year location experiment of walnut-winter wheat intercrop combined with exogenous 6-benzyladenine (6-BA, the first synthetic cytokinin) treatment was conducted to reveal the mechanism of 6-BA in inhibiting wheat growth and yield formation under shade stress by measuring the photosynthetic characteristics, antioxidant capacity, hormone homeostasis of wheat flag leaves and yield.

Article Synopsis
  • The pilot study examined financial losses and risk factors associated with hamstring injuries in elite Brazilian soccer players, with a focus on 34 male athletes over a 12-month season.
  • Nine hamstring injuries were confirmed in eight players, leading to an average recovery time of 22 days and a potential financial loss of $43.2 million USD for the team.
  • Factors linked to a higher risk of injury included past injuries, reduced knee flexor strength, decreased ankle flexibility, and a higher hamstring fatigue index, suggesting the need for preventive measures for those at higher risk.

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic inflammatory disease, is characterized by joint swelling, cartilage erosion, and bone destruction. This study investigated the therapeutic efficacy of Carnosic acid (CA), a natural compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, in an adjuvant-induced arthritis model.

Methods: Paw swelling and arthritis index were measured.

Cytogenetic analysis of meiotic behaviour and stability in a trigeneric hybrid (triticale x trigopiro).

Protoplasma

Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Trigeneric hybrids in Triticeae may help to establish evolutionary relationships among different genomes present in the same cellular genetic background and to transfer different alien characters into cultivated wheat. In the present study, a trigeneric hybrid involving species of Triticum, Secale, and Thinopyrum was synthesized by crossing hexaploid triticale with hexaploid trigopiro. The meiotic behaviour of chromosomes belonging to different genomes was analyzed, using routine and in situ hybridization techniques in F1, F2, and F3 generations of the trigeneric hybrid.
