Published: May 2010

In this paper, we present an interesting result of nonlinear light pulse propagation within a Mach-Zehnder Inteferometer (MZI) which can be used to extend the existed on off keying (OOK) techniques. The goal of this paper is OOK generation based on MZI incorporating a pumped nonlinear ring resonators system. We first analyze the principles of a phase modulation scheme using MZI incorporating the triple nonlinear ring resonators, which can be fabricated and used in practical communications. After that, we focus on the recent modulation schemes, where the all-optical on off keying and the phase shift control for phase shaped binary transmission (PSBT) are discussed in details. The novelty of this work is that the nonlinear ring resonators are used incorporating a MZI, where the extended switching generation can be achieved and seen.

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIMHs), characterized by noncentrosymmetric structures arising from the incorporation of chiral organic molecules that break inversion symmetry, have attracted significant attention. Particularly, chiral-polar 2D OIMHs offer a unique platform for multifunctional applications, as the coexistence of chirality and polarity enables the simultaneous manifestation of distinct properties such as nonlinear optical (NLO) effects, circular dichroism (CD), and ferroelectricity. In this study, we report the first synthesis of hafnium (Hf)-based chiral 2D OIMHs, achieved through the strategic incorporation of -substituents on the benzene ring of chiral organic components.

Microelectromechanical System Resonant Devices: A Guide for Design, Modeling and Testing.

Micromachines (Basel)

November 2024

Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Politecnico di Milano, Piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32, 20133 Milano, Italy.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMSs) are attracting increasing interest from the scientific community for the large variety of possible applications and for the continuous request from the market to improve performances, while keeping small dimensions and reduced costs. To be able to simulate a priori and in real time the dynamic response of resonant devices is then crucial to guide the mechanical design and to support the MEMSs industry. In this work, we propose a simplified modeling procedure able to reproduce the nonlinear dynamics of MEMS resonant devices of arbitrary geometry.

Range Expansion Technology for Ring MEMS Gyroscopes Based on Drive Voltage Modulation.

Micromachines (Basel)

November 2024

School of Instrument and Electronics, North University of China, Taiyuan 030051, China.

This paper proposes a method to control the sensitivity of a ring MEMS gyroscope by adjusting the driving control voltage via MEMS. The aim is to explore the relationship between the range of the ring MEMS gyroscope and the driving control voltage, establishing a mathematical model that correlates driving control voltage with sensitivity. By applying different driving voltages to the same gyroscope, the study evaluates the performance and range of the gyroscope.

Active Physics-Informed Deep Learning: Surrogate Modeling for Nonplanar Wavefront Excitation of Topological Nanophotonic Devices.

Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics, Kiel University, Leibnizstr. 11-19, Kiel 24098, Germany.

Topological plasmonics combines principles of topology and plasmonics to provide new methods for controlling light, analogous to topological edge states in photonics. However, designing such topological states remains challenging due to the complexity of the high-dimensional design space. We present a novel method that uses supervised, physics-informed deep learning and surrogate modeling to design topological devices for desired wavelengths.

Due to the sulfur's atoms' propensity to form molecules and/or polymeric chains of various sizes and configuration, elemental sulfur possesses more allotropes and polymorphs than any other element at ambient conditions. This variability of the starting building blocks is partially responsible for its rich and fascinating phase diagram, with pressure and temperature changing the states of sulfur from insulating molecular rings and chains to semiconducting low- and high-density amorphous configurations to incommensurate superconducting metallic atomic phase. Here, using a fast compression technique, we demonstrate that the rapid pressurisation of liquid sulfur can effectively break the molecular ring structure, forming a glassy polymeric state of pure-chain molecules (Am-S).
