Ion-exchanged Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped waveguide amplifiers longitudinally pumped by broad area lasers.

A multimode pumping scheme for Er(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped waveguide amplifiers based on broad area lasers at around 980 nm is presented. The proposed amplifier is fabricated by ion-exchange (IE) technique on silicate and phosphate glasses. The highly efficient energy transfer from Yb(3+) to Er(3+) ions, combined with the use of low cost and high power broad area laser, allows the realization of high performance and cost-effective integrated amplifiers. The structure has been designed and numerically studied using a 3D finite element modelling tool, and over 3 dB/cm small signal gain has been predicted for an optimized amplifier. Preliminary characterization of an amplifier structure provides a first experimental evidence of the novel multimode longitudinal pumping.

Accurate estimates of forest dynamics and above-ground forest biomass for the topographically challenging Himalaya are crucial for understanding carbon storage potential, assessing ecosystem services, and guiding conservation efforts in response to climate change. This dataset provides a manually delineated multi-temporal forest inventory and a comprehensive record of above-ground biomass (AGB) across the Kashmir Himalaya, generated from field observations, advanced remote sensing and machine learning. Data were collected and generated through remote sensing techniques and extensive in-situ measurements of 6220 trees (n=275 plots), including tree diameter at breast height, species composition, and tree density to map forest area and model AGB across varied terrain.

Alien species can influence populations of native species through individual-level effects such as predation, competition, and poisoning. For alien species that possess strong defensive chemicals, poisoning is one of the most powerful mechanisms of individual-level effects on native biota. Extreme droughts generally decrease productivity in grassland ecosystems with negative consequences for nature's contribution to people. The extent to which this negative effect varies among grassland types and over time in response to multi-year extreme drought remains unclear. Here, using a coordinated distributed experiment that simulated four years of growing-season drought (around 66% rainfall reduction), we compared drought sensitivity within and among six representative grasslands spanning broad precipitation gradients in each of Eurasia and North America-two of the Northern Hemisphere's largest grass-dominated regions.
