Article Abstract

Introduction: The Interferon-γ in vitro detection tests could be a useful tool in the diagnosis of active tuberculosis compared to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).

Methods: The QuantiFERON-TB-Gold in Tube (QFG-IT) test was performed on the blood of 118 patients with active tuberculosis and the results compared with the tuberculin test.

Results: The QFG-IT test was positive in 94 cases (79.7%), negative in 17 (14.4%) and indeterminate in 7 (5.9%). A negative or indeterminate QFG-IT test was more common in older patients (P=0.017) and in cases with negative smear tests (P=0.041). The kappa agreement between the tuberculin and QFG-IT tests was 74.5% with a kappa value of 0.45 (SE:0.136). Thirteen of the patients studied were infected with HIV and the tuberculin was positive in 5 of the 12 cases (38.5%) in whom it was performed, with the QFG-IT being positive in 9/13 (69.2%).

Conclusions: The QFG-IT test may be a useful complimentary tool to the tuberculin test in the diagnosis of tuberculosis.

Background: Hemodialysis (HD) patients are at increased risk of reactivation of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) compared with the general population. QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) for LTBI detection is more promising than tuberculin skin test (TST) in HD patients.

Aim: In our study, we evaluated the value of the TST and QFT-G In-Tube (QFG-IT) test in the development of active tuberculosis (TB), in the HD patients, and in healthy controls.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the effectiveness of the QuantiFERON TB Gold-in-Tube (QFG-IT) test and the tuberculin skin test (TST) for diagnosing active tuberculosis (TB) in children in Taiwan.
  • The QFG-IT test showed a sensitivity of 100%, significantly outperforming the TST, which had a sensitivity of only 62.5%.
  • Despite being more expensive, QFG-IT proved valuable in accurately diagnosing TB, particularly in cases where TST might yield false positives due to BCG vaccination effects.

Objective: Patients undergoing haemodialysis for chronic renal failure-hemodialysis (CRF-HD) are at risk of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). The effectiveness of using blood IP-10 production capacity to diagnose LTBI in CRF-HD patients was analysed.

Methods: The study enrolled 50 CRF-HD patients.

A modification of a highly practical human interferon-gamma release assay for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), the QuantiFERON((R))-TB Gold (In-Tube Method) (QFG-IT) assay, was evaluated for diagnosing natural mycobacterial infection in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). All animals in a captive colony were tested using the QFG-IT and tuberculin skin test (TST). Animals testing positive to these tests were euthanised and necropsied.
