An approach to heroin use disorder intervention within the South African context: a content analysis study.

Subst Abuse Treat Prev Policy

Foundation for Professional Development, Pretoria, South Africa.

Published: June 2010

Background: The field of heroin use disorder intervention has been in transition in South Africa since the outbreak of the heroin epidemic. Yet despite growing evidence of an association between heroin users' use of supplementary intervention services and intervention outcomes, heroin use disorder intervention programmes in South Africa generally fail to meet international research-based intervention standards.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews with ten heroin use disorder specialists were conducted and the interviews were subjected to content analysis.

Results And Discussion: In terms of theory and practice, findings of the study suggest that the field of heroin use disorder intervention in South Africa remains fragmented and transitional. Specifically, limited strategic public health care polices that address the syndromes' complexities have been implemented within the South Africa context.

Conclusions: Although many interventions and procedures have begun to be integrated routinely into heroin use disorder clinical practice within the South African context, comorbidity factors, such as psychiatric illness and HIV/AIDS, need to be more cogently addressed. Pragmatic and evidence-based public health care policies designed to reduce the harmful consequences associated with heroin use still needs to be implemented in the South African context.

Background: People in justice settings experience higher rates of psychiatric morbidity, including alcohol and drug use disorders, compared with the general population. However, our understanding of opioid-related harms in justice settings is limited. This study used ambulance data to examine opioid-related harms and experiences of care in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, during periods of incarceration or detention.

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a medical condition where an individual compulsively misuses drugs or alcohol despite knowing the negative consequences. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been implicated in various types of SUDs, including nicotine, heroin, and alcohol use disorders. Our research aimed to investigate the effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the ACC as a potential therapeutic approach for morphine use disorder.

Objective: The behavioral and diagnostic heterogeneity within the opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnosis is not readily captured in current animal models, limiting the translational relevance of the mechanistic research that is conducted in experimental animals. The authors hypothesized that a nonlinear clustering of OUD-like behavioral traits would capture population heterogeneity and yield subpopulations of OUD vulnerable rats with distinct behavioral and neurocircuit profiles.

Methods: Over 900 male and female heterogeneous stock rats, a line capturing genetic and behavioral heterogeneity present in humans, were assessed for several measures of heroin use and rewarded and non-rewarded seeking behaviors.

The subject of substance use disorders in the pediatric population remains a disturbing conundrum for clinicians, researchers and society in general. Many of our youth are at risk of being damaged and even killed by drug addictions that result from the collision of rapidly developing as well as vulnerable central nervous systems encountering the current global drug addiction crisis. A major motif of this chemical calamity is opioid use disorder in adolescents and young adults that was stimulated by the 19th century identification of such highly addictive drugs as morphine, heroin and a non-opiate, cocaine.

Background & Aims: Buprenorphine and methadone are drugs used as medication for addiction treatment for patients with opioid use disorders (OUDs). However, scarce evidence indicates that they induce oxidative stress, which contributes to the deterioration of psychosocial parameters, thus complicating successful rehab. Therefore, a dietary antioxidant intervention such as pomegranate could be beneficial for that group of patients.
