The study enrolled 30 patients aged 2 to 18 years, who had been operated on at the Prof A. L. Polenov Russian Neurosurgical Institute in 2008-2009. The patients had undergone total intravenous anesthesia with the opioid analgesic fentanyl (3.5 microg/kg x hr), the central alpha 2-adrenoblocker clofelin (1.2 microg/kg x hr), recofol (3 mg/kg x hr) under myorelaxation (arduan, esmeron) and artificial ventilation. Assessment of a neuroendocrine response and postoperative analgesia levels by the physiological and self-appraisal scales showed the high efficacy of pre-emptive analgesia using paracetamol in the complex of multicomponent anesthesia using the central alpha 2-adrenoblocker clofelin.

The development of new convenient tools for the design of multicomponent nucleic acid (NA) complexes is one of the challenges in biomedicine and NA nanotechnology. In this paper, we analyzed the formation of hybrid RNA/DNA concatemers and self-limited complexes by a pair of oligonucleotides using UV melting, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and a gel shift assay. Effects of the size of the linker between duplex-forming segments of the oligonucleotides on complexes' shape and number of subunits were compared and systematized for RNA/DNA, DNA/DNA, and RNA/RNA assemblies.

Compressive Load Capacity of Concrete Structures Made of Hollow Blocks with Voids Filled with Concrete of Various Features.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Faculty of Production Engineering and Materials Technology, Czestochowa University of Technology, Dabrowskiego 69, 42-201 Czestochowa, Poland.

A masonry made of hollow concrete blocks in modern constructions differs from the traditional one in that the empty space (up to 70%) makes it possible to create complex high-strength load-bearing structures by filling the voids with monolithic or reinforced concrete. The aim of this study was to examine specimens of concrete structures made of hollow blocks with voids filled with concretes with various features. The research methodology is based on the results of numerical and experimental tests.

Background: Yogurt has emerged as an essential nutritional food in contemporary diets, and the development of new multi-component yogurt formulations has become a focal point of current research.

Objective: In this study, the effects of fermentation compounds and the addition of sugar, soy milk on the quality and probiotic activity of milk-soy mixed yogurt were studied to determine the optimal formation of mixed yogurt.

Methods: The various fermentation compounds (YO-MIX 883, Lactobacillus Casei complex starter cultures, Lactobacillus Paracasei compound starter cultures), different concentrations of milk-soy additions (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%) and sugar (2, 4, 6, 8%) were tested within each experimental group, and the pH, appropriate acidity, and total viable bacterial count of the fermented milk-soy mixed yogurt were determined throughout the fermentation and refrigeration processes.

Ageing and Movement Research Group, Department of Population Health Sciences, Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom.

Background/aims: In the absence of disease-modifying therapies for Parkinson's disease, much research focuses on improving quality of life, health and wellbeing. It is important to evaluate potential treatments and innovative care models in a robust and standardised way. Disease-specific outcomes have limitations in older people, those with cognitive impairment, multimorbidity, disability or short life expectancy.

We present the results of a GC-MS and UHPLC-MS analysis of residue recovered from the marrow cavity of a 7,000-year-old bovid femur from Kruger Cave, South Africa. The femur was filled with an unknown substance into which were embedded three bone arrowheads, indicating that the femur served as a quiver. Our results reveal the presence of digitoxin and strophanthidin, both cardiac glycosides associated with hunting poisons.
