Ni species on the spent NiMo catalyst from ultra-deep hydrodesulfurization of gas oil in a commercial plant were studied by Ni K-edge EXAFS and TEM measurement without contact of the catalysts with air. The Ni-Mo coordination shell related to the Ni-Mo-S phase was observed in the spent catalyst by quasi in situ Ni K-edge EXAFS measurement with a newly constructed high-pressure chamber. The coordination number of this shell was almost identical to that obtained by in situ Ni K-edge EXAFS measurement of the fresh catalyst sulfided at 1.1 MPa. On the other hand, large agglomerates of Ni(3)S(2) were observed only in the spent catalyst by quasi in situ TEM/EDX measurement. MoS(2)-like slabs were sintered slightly on the spent catalyst, where they were destacked to form monolayer slabs. These results suggest that the Ni-Mo-S phase is preserved on the spent catalyst and Ni(3)S(2) agglomerates are formed by sintering of Ni(3)S(2) species originally present on the fresh catalyst.

Organoarsenicals are toxic pollutants of global concern, and their environmental geochemical behavior might be greatly controlled by iron (Fe) (hydr)oxides through coprecipitation, which is rarely investigated. Here, the effects of the incorporation of dimethylarsenate (DMAs(V)), a typical organoarsenical, into the ferrihydrite (Fh) structure on the mineral physicochemical properties and Fe(II)-induced phase transformation of DMAs(V)-Fh coprecipitates with As/Fe molar ratios up to 0.0876±0.

Antimony(V) mobility in acid mine drainage (AMD) is often controlled by sorption and coprecipitation with schwertmannite - a poorly-ordered Fe(III) oxyhydroxysulfate mineral. However, due to its metastable nature, schwertmannite transforms over time to more thermodynamically stable Fe(III) phases, such as goethite. This study examines how transformation of Sb(V)-bearing schwertmannite to goethite impacts Sb(V) mobility, while also assessing the role that Sb(V) may play in stabilizing schwertmannite against such transformation.

Article Synopsis
  • * Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) is an effective technique for assessing material temperature and density for certain elements under dynamic compression.
  • * The National Ignition Facility has created different configurations for EXAFS measurements using advanced x-ray sources and curved-crystal spectrometers to improve material analysis in both standard and extreme conditions.

Full-field transmission X-ray microscopy has been recently implemented at the hard X-ray ROCK-SOLEIL quick-EXAFS beamline, adding micrometre spatial resolution to the second time resolution characterizing the beamline. Benefiting from a beam size versatility due to the beamline focusing optics, full-field hyperspectral XANES imaging has been successfully used at the Fe K-edge for monitoring the pressure-induced spin transition of a 150 µm × 150 µm Fe(o-phen)(NCS) single crystal and the charge of millimetre-sized LiFePO battery electrodes. Hyperspectral imaging over 2000 eV has been reported for the simultaneous monitoring of Fe and Cu speciation changes during activation of a FeCu bimetallic catalyst along a millimetre-sized catalyst bed.

Antimony sorption to schwertmannite in acid sulfate environments.

Faculty of Science and Engineering, Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW 2480, Australia. Electronic address:

Schwertmannite is a poorly-crystalline Fe(III) oxyhydroxysulfate mineral that may control Sb(V) mobility in acid sulfate environments, including acid mine drainage and acid sulfate soils. However, the mechanisms that govern uptake of aqueous Sb(V) by schwertmannite in such environments are poorly understood. To address this issue, we examined Sb(V) sorption to schwertmannite across a range of environmentally-relevant Sb(V) loadings at pH 3 in sulfate-rich solutions.
