Bovine serum, EDTA-plasma and EDTA-plasma fortified with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) as antioxidant were compared with regard to their suitability for metabolomic studies. Metabolic fingerprints were generated from GC-TOF-MS data using the Leco ChromaTOF software in combination with the in-house retention time correction and data alignment tool INCA. A total of 6, 9 and 21 significant features with a false discovery rate of <0.05 were identified by INCA upon comparing EDTA- versus EDTA-ASA-plasma, EDTA-plasma versus serum and EDTA-ASA-plasma versus serum, respectively. To confirm that the observed signal intensities in the GC-TOF-MS fingerprints reflected true metabolite abundances, 19 amino acids, glucose and 6 organic acids were quantified by means of GC-MS using stable-isotope-labeled internal standards. As observed with the fingerprints, only the concentrations of lactate and citrate were found to be significantly lower in EDTA-plasma and serum, respectively, whereas the concentrations of the other metabolites were similar among the three sample types investigated.

Objectives: Gastrointestinal (GI) disturbance is a frequent complication in patients with thoracolumbar vertebral fracture (TVF). Transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (TEA) has been reported to effectively accelerate postoperative GI function recovery after abdominal surgery. This study aimed to investigate the effects of TEA on postoperative recovery and the associated mechanisms.

Objective: Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) have been used for treating acute hyperkalaemia. The pharmacodynamic properties of SZC suggest greater theoretical utility in the acute setting than SPS, but there is no clear guidance on an optimal potassium binder. This study evaluated the efficacy of SZC and SPS in the treatment of acute hyperkalaemia.

Hyperglycemic emergencies cause significant losses of body water, sodium, and potassium. This report presents a method for computing the actual losses of water and monovalent cations in these emergencies. We developed formulas for computing the losses of water and monovalent cations as a function of the presenting serum sodium and glucose levels, the sum of the concentrations of sodium plus potassium in the lost fluids, and body water at the time of hyperglycemia presentation as measured by bioimpedance or in the initial euglycemic state as estimated by anthropometric formulas.

Background/objectives: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most concerning complications following gastrectomy. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the predictive accuracy of C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), fibrinogen, and the mean platelet volume (MPV) in the early diagnosis of post-gastrectomy AL.
Methods: A prospective bicentric observational study was conducted including all patients undergoing elective gastrectomy between August 2018 and December 2022.

Background: Children and adolescents with obesity have altered serum copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) levels, which are associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, and health outcomes. The inclusion of cashew nuts in an adequate diet may provide health benefits and help improve the mineral status of individuals with obesity.
Objective: To evaluate the effects of cashew nut consumption on biomarkers of Cu and Zn status in adolescents with obesity.
