Published: July 2010

Three series of novel water-soluble beta-cyclodextrin-dextran polymers have been prepared by "click" chemistry. The polymers were synthesized from alkyne-modified dextrans (AMDs) onto which mono-6-O-deoxy-monoazido-betaCD (N3betaCD) was grafted by a copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). The polymers have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The binding properties have been characterized by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and show excellent accessibility of the betaCDs.

In the fight against antibiotic resistance, which is rising to dangerously high levels worldwide, new strategies based on antibiotic-conjugated biocompatible polymers bound to magnetic nanoparticles that allow the drug to be manipulated and delivered to a specific target are being proposed. Here, we report the direct surface engineering of nontoxic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) using biocompatible dextran (Dex) covalently linked to β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with the ability to form non-covalent complexes with silver-sulfamethazine (SMT-Ag). To achieve a good interaction of β-CD-modified dextran with the surface of the nanoparticles, it was functionalized with diphosphonic acid (DPA) that provides strong binding to Fe atoms.

In the present paper, we report on a detailed study regarding the thermal degradation behaviours of some bio-sourced substrates. These were previously identified as the base materials in the formulations for fireproofing wood plaques through our investigations. The substrates included: β-cyclodextrin, dextran, potato starch, agar-agar, tamarind kernel powder and chitosan.

Magnetic ferrite nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with biocompatible polymers capable of drug loading and release are fascinating nanostructures for delivering anti-cancer drugs. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel β-cyclodextrin-folate-tethered dextran polymer. Nickel-zinc ferrite nanoparticles are prepared and coated with the polymer to form a biocompatible hybrid magnetic nanocarrier.

The aim of this work was to investigate the suitability of β-cyclodextrin-dextran (BCD-dextran) polymer as cholesterol sequestering agent in vitro. For this purpose, BCD-dextran-cholesterol complexation was studied by phase solubility studies as well as with a specifically designed in vitro model based on giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) to evaluate the ability of this polymer to sequestrate cholesterol from phospholipid bilayers. Cholesterol-sequestering ability of BCD-dextran was also investigated on different cell lines relevant for the hematopoietic system and results were correlated to cells toxicity.

The aim of this study was to assess the potential of novel β-cyclodextrin (βCD)-dextran polymers for drug delivery. The size distribution of βCD-dextrans (for eventual parenteral administration), the influence of the dextran backbones on the stability of the βCD/drug complex, the solubilization efficiency of poorly soluble drugs and drug release properties were investigated. Size analysis of different βCD-dextrans was measured by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4).
