Representational geometry explains puzzling error distributions in behavioral tasks.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Department of Economics, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027.

Measuring and interpreting errors in behavioral tasks is critical for understanding cognition. Conventional wisdom assumes that encoding/decoding errors for continuous variables in behavioral tasks should naturally have Gaussian distributions, so that deviations from normality in the empirical data indicate the presence of more complex sources of noise. This line of reasoning has been central for prior research on working memory.

The effectiveness of state-of-the-art cross-linking strategies and mass spectrometry (MS) detection was explored in an important biological context, namely, the ubiquitin-proteasome system, which is responsible for most of the regulated protein degradation in eukaryotic cells. The locations of possible binding sites on the 19S proteasome regulatory particle for Lys linked polyubiquitin chains were examined using cross-linking strategies and MS based detection by comparing two types of cross-linkers: a (bis)-sulfosuccinimidyl suberate (BS) and diethyl suberothioimidate (DEST). The well-established BS-based strategy produced 328 cross-linked peptides; however, no ubiquitin-19S cross-links were observed.

A growing literature within the field of air pollution exposure assessment addresses the issue of environmental justice. Leveraging the increasing availability of exposure datasets with broad spatial coverage and high spatial resolution, a number of works have assessed inequalities in exposure across racial/ethnic and other socioeconomic groupings. However, environmental justice research presents the additional need to evaluate exposure inequity-inequality that is systematic, unfair, and avoidable-which may be framed in several ways.

Patient portals are secure online platforms that offer patients access to various functions such as personal health information. While patient portals are being increasingly offered by health services, there are limited data on their use for persons living with home mechanical ventilation (HMV) and/or long-term tracheostomy. This study, conducted at an Australian hospital's home mechanical ventilation and long-term tracheostomy services, aimed to explore the perspectives and attitudes of patients and carers regarding the introduction of a patient portal.
