Effects of Synbiotic Supplementation on Bone and Metabolic Health in Caucasian Postmenopausal Women: Rationale and Design of the OsteoPreP Trial.

Nutrients

December 2024

Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre, Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, Institute of Medicine, University of Gothenburg, 41345 Gothenburg, Sweden.

Background/objectives: Correction of decreased diversity of the gut microbiome, which is characteristic of menopause, by supplementation with a synbiotic may attenuate or prevent dysbiosis processes and preserve bone mass. We describe the rationale and design of the OsteoPreP trial aimed at evaluating the effects of 12 months of supplementation with a synbiotic on bone and metabolic health in postmenopausal Caucasian women.

Methods: This is a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial among 160 Caucasian, postmenopausal women with no current diagnosis of osteoporosis or supplementation with pro- or prebiotics, and no medical treatment affecting bone turnover.

Center of mass kinematic reconstruction during steady-state walking using optimized template models.

PLoS One

November 2024

Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana, United States of America.

Template models, such as the Bipedal Spring-Loaded Inverted Pendulum and the Virtual Pivot Point, have been widely used as low-dimensional representations of the complex dynamics in legged locomotion. Despite their ability to qualitatively match human walking characteristics like M-shaped ground reaction force (GRF) profiles, they often exhibit discrepancies when compared to experimental data, notably in overestimating vertical center of mass (CoM) displacement and underestimating gait event timings (touchdown/ liftoff). This paper hypothesizes that the constant leg stiffness of these models explains the majority of these discrepancies.

A hovering bubble with a spontaneous horizontal oscillation.

Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, China.

Active matters, characterized by multi-mode motions, have been emerging for both engineering and biological applications. Generally, active objects rely on the symmetry-broken structures, compositions, or interfacial activities through a physical or chemical approach. Here, we report an active bubble spontaneously hovering with a horizontal oscillation at the solid/liquid interface by impacting a stationary laser beam into a liquid through a transparent solid cover.

Two simple models - vaulting over stiff legs and rebounding over compliant legs - are employed to describe the mechanics of legged locomotion. It is agreed that compliant legs are necessary for describing running and that legs are compliant while walking. Despite this agreement, stiff legs continue to be employed to model walking.

How Shell Add-On Products Influence Varsity Football Helmet Performance?

Ann Biomed Eng

November 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the performance of three shell add-on products for helmets under varsity-level impact conditions through laboratory tests.
  • Pendulum impact tests measured head kinematics and concussion risk with different helmet models and configurations to assess each add-on's effectiveness.
  • Results showed that the Guardian NXT add-on significantly reduced peak linear acceleration, peak rotational acceleration, and concussion risk more than the other two products, emphasizing the importance of helmet model selection for improved head protection.
