Interactive visualization applications benefit from simplification techniques that generate good-quality coarse meshes from high-resolution meshes that represent the domain. These meshes often contain interesting substructures, called embedded structures, and it is desirable to preserve the topology of the embedded structures during simplification, in addition to preserving the topology of the domain. This paper describes a proof that link conditions, proposed earlier, are sufficient to ensure that edge contractions preserve the topology of the embedded structures and the domain. Excluding two specific configurations, the link conditions are also shown to be necessary for topology preservation. Repeated application of edge contraction on an extended complex produces a coarser representation of the domain and the embedded structures. An extension of the quadric error metric is used to schedule edge contractions, resulting in a good-quality coarse mesh that closely approximates the input domain and the embedded structures.

Immobilizing enzymes onto solid supports having enhanced catalytic activity and resistance to harsh external conditions is considered as a promising and critical method of broadening enzymatic applications in biosensing, biocatalysis, and biomedical devices; however, it is considerably hampered by limited strategies. Here, a core-shell strategy involving a soft-core hexahistidine metal assembly (HmA) is innovatively developed and characterized with encapsulated enzymes (catalase (CAT), horseradish peroxidase, glucose oxidase (GOx), and cascade enzymes (CAT+GOx)) and hard porous shells (zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), ZIF-8, ZIF-67, ZIF-90, calcium carbonate, and hydroxyapatite). The enzyme-friendly environment provided by the embedded HmA proves beneficial for enhanced catalytic activity, which is particularly effective in preserving fragile enzymes that will have been deactivated without the HmA core during the mineralization of porous shells.

Biofilm is an assemblage of microorganisms embedded within the extracellular matrix that provides mechanical stability, nutrient absorption, antimicrobial resistance, cell-cell interactions, and defence against host immune system. Various biomolecules such as lipids, carbohydrates, protein polymers (amyloid), and eDNA are present in the matrix playing significant role in determining the distinctive properties of biofilm. The formation of biofilms contributes to resistance against antimicrobial therapy in most of the human infections and exacerbates existing diseases.

Bacteriophages are viruses that target bacteria, playing a crucial role in microbial ecology. Phage proteins are important in understanding phage biology, such as virus infection, replication, and evolution. Although a large number of new phages have been identified via metagenomic sequencing, many of them have limited protein function annotation.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are an appealing electrochemical energy storage solution due to their affordability and safety. Significant attention has been focused on vanadium oxide cathode materials for ZIBs, owing to their high specific capacity, unique layered or tunnel structures, and low cost. Compared to traditional methods for preparing and assembling electrode materials, direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering allows direct synthesis and uniform deposition on current collectors, offering advantages such as simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and strong film adhesion.

Cephalopods such as squids, octopuses, and cuttlefishes can change their bodies' color to match the surrounding environments by contracting or expanding the sac just below the surface of the skin. Inspired by this mechanism, artificial cephalopod chromatophores which are prepared by thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide)-based hydrogel films embedded with black, red, and yellow pigments are presented, they can swell and shrink under temperature stimuli, like the natural chromatophores. The artificial chromatophores embedded with cuttlefish ink are further used to fabricate artificial J.
