The salen-type Schiff base (2,2'-bis(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)-1,1'-binaphthyl (BHB)) has been synthesized and characterized. Exhibiting absorption and fluorescence changes in the presence of Zn(2+) in chloroform and ethanol mixed solution, BHB could be used as a fluorescent chemosensor for the detection of Zn(2+). Furthermore, by monitoring the fluorescence and absorbance as output signals, BHB can function as a combinatorial logic circuit for a molecular half-subtractor with Zn(2+) and UV irradiation as input variables.

DNA is commonly employed as a substrate for the building of artificial logic networks due to its excellent biocompatibility and programmability. Till now, DNA logic circuits are rapidly evolving to accomplish advanced operations. Nonetheless, nowadays, most DNA circuits remain to be disposable and lack of field programmability and thereby limits their practicability.

Intelligent monitoring of the available lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in soil samples based on half adder and half subtractor molecular logic gates.

State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry, Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guiyang, 550081, China. Electronic address:

The available heavy metals in soil samples can cause the direct toxicity on ecosystems, plants, and human health. Traditional chemical extraction and recombinant bacterial methods for the available heavy metals assay often suffer from inaccuracy and poor specificity. In this work, we construct half adder and half subtractor molecular logic gates with molecular-level biocomputation capabilities for the intelligent sensing of the available lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd).

Controlling the self-assembly of DNA nanostructures using rationally designed logic gates is a major goal of dynamic DNA nanotechnology, which could facilitate the development of biomedicine, molecular computation, et al. In previous works, the regulations mostly relied on either toehold-mediated strand displacement or stimuli-driven conformational switch, requiring elaborately-designed or specific DNA sequences. Herein, we reported a facile, base-sequence-independent strategy for logically controlling DNA self-assembly through external molecules.

Translational modulation based on RNA-binding proteins can be used to construct artificial gene circuits, but RNA-binding proteins capable of regulating translation efficiently and orthogonally remain scarce. Here we report CARTRIDGE (Cas-Responsive Translational Regulation Integratable into Diverse Gene control) to repurpose Cas proteins as translational modulators in mammalian cells. We demonstrate that a set of Cas proteins efficiently and orthogonally repress or activate the translation of designed mRNAs that contain a Cas-binding RNA motif in the 5'-UTR.

National-Regional Joint Engineering Research Center for Soil Pollution Control and Remediation in South China, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Integrated Agro-environmental Pollution Control and Management, Institute of Eco-environmental and Soil Sciences, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou, 510650, China. Electronic address:

The frequent emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants increased viral transmissibility and reduced protection afforded by vaccines. The rapid, multichannel, and intelligent screening of variants is critical to minimizing community transmissions. DNA molecular logic gates have attracted wide attention in recent years due to the powerful information processing capabilities and molecular data biocomputing functions.
