Our recent study (Ballengeé and Sessions, 2009. J Exp Zool (Mol Dev Evol) 312B:1-10) shows that deformed frogs with missing limbs can be explained by sublethal "selective predation" by predators that are too small, or have mouthparts that are too small, to consume whole tadpoles. Skelly and Benard do not agree with our conclusions and feel that they are not well founded. Here we respond to their critique.

Amphibians are continuously exposed to pollutants and anthropogenic stressors in their natural habitats, representing a significant challenge to their survival. This study aimed to quantify the extent of DNA damage caused by chronic industrial and agrochemical surface water pollution in wild populations of the marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus). The observed genotoxic effects on the marsh frog DNA, manifesting as abnormalities in erythrocyte nuclei, micronuclei, and DNA strand breaks, demonstrate a clear cause-and-effect relationship with surface water parameters, heavy metals, metalloids, and pesticides.

The leptin receptor overlapping transcript (LepROT) has been suggested to play several roles in immunomodulatory mechanisms; however, the understanding of its role in immunity is still very limited. Here, we performed hematoxylin-eosin staining, quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), immunofluorescence and western blotting to investigate the roles of LepROT in the immunomodulatory mechanism and the influence of its expression on the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway, such as the activation of IκB kinase and NF-кB, in amphibian resistance to infection with (). After infection, the liver, lung, kidney, skin, muscle, and stomach of showed cell structure disturbance, bleeding, and texture abnormalities.
