Programmable Morphology-Adaptive Peptide Nanoassembly for Enhanced Catalytic Therapy.

Adv Mater

December 2024

CAS Center for Excellence in Nanoscience, Laboratory for Biomedical Effects of Nanomaterials and Nanosafety, National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST), Beijing, 100190, China.

Nanocatalytic therapy holds significant promise in cancer treatment by exploiting the high oxidative stress within tumor cells. However, efficiently delivering nanocatalytic agents to tumor tissues and maximizing their catalytic activity in situ remain critical challenges. Morphology-adaptive delivery systems, capable of adjusting their physical form in response to physiological conditions, offer unique spatiotemporal control for navigating complex biological environments like the tumor microenvironment.

Programmable Robotic Shape Shifting and Color Morphing Dynamics Through Magneto-Mechano-Chromic Coupling.

Adv Mater

December 2024

The State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics and Superfine Microstructure, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Science, Shanghai, 200050, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Creating a compact structure that mimics the shape-shifting and color-changing abilities of natural organisms presents challenges but offers new possibilities for hybrid robotic and visual applications.
  • The development of the Soft Magneto-Mechano-Chromic (SoMMeC) structure allows for real-time and programmable changes in color and shape, enabling advanced interactions between robots, environments, and users.
  • The SoMMeC technology features quick color transformations across the visible spectrum and can be used in various applications such as advertising, camouflage, and advanced robotics, ultimately making systems more flexible and capable.

We have discovered a novel transition rule for binary cellular automata (CAs) that yields self-replicating structures across two spatial and temporal scales from sparse random initial conditions. Lower-level, shape-shifting clusters frequently follow a transient attractor trajectory, generating new clusters, some of which periodically self-duplicate. When the initial distribution of live cells is sufficiently sparse, these clusters coalesce into larger formations that also self-replicate.

Shape-shifting versions of class in Australia and the pursuit of equity in public health.

Health Promot Int

August 2024

Brain and Mind Centre, The University of Sydney, Gadigal Country, Camperdown, New South Wales 2050, Australia.

The COVID-19 pandemic and current cost of living crisis have highlighted socioeconomically patterned health disparities, bringing renewed focus on equity in public health. Despite political rhetoric invoking cultural narratives of egalitarianism and opportunities for class mobility, social class remains a significant factor in health outcomes in the Australian context. For social scientists, class (despite robust critiques) is a key analytical concept that has been theoretically broadened to encompass social and cultural practices (habitus).

Shape Memory Polymers with Patternable Recovery Onset Regulated by Light.

Adv Mater

September 2024

State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, College of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China.

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) show attractive prospects in emerging fields such as soft robots and biomedical devices. Although their typical trigger-responsive character offers the essential shape-changing controllability, having to access external stimulation is a major bottleneck toward many applications. Recently emerged autonomous SMPs exhibit unique stimuli-free shape-shifting behavior with its controllability achieved via a delayed and programmable recovery onset.
