Introduction: The incidence of multiple primary cancers is reported to be between 0.3% and 4.3%. The second primary lesion is identified either simultaneously with the primary lesion (synchronous) or after a period of time (metachronous). Few cases of metastasis of breast carcinoma to the esophagus and vice versa have been reported in the past.

Case Presentation: We report an extremely rare case of a 55-year-old Indian woman who had carcinomas in both the esophagus and the breast simultaneously. She was treated successfully using combined modalities of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Conclusion: Cases of synchronous double malignancies can be treated by dealing with the malignancy in the two sites as independent carcinomas. We have to take into consideration the total dose of radiation to a critical organ as well as the effect of the total dose of toxic chemotherapeutic drugs on our patient.

Contrasting Responses of Smoke Dispersion and Fire Emissions to Aerosol-Radiation Interaction during the Largest Australian Wildfires in 2019-2020.

January 2025

Key Laboratory for Semi-Arid Climate Change of the Ministry of Education, College of Atmospheric Sciences, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou 730000, China.

The record-breaking 2019-2020 Australian wildfires have been primarily linked to climate change and its internal variability. However, the meteorological feedback mechanisms affecting smoke dispersion and wildfire emissions on a synoptic scale remain unclear. This study focused on the largest wildfires occurring between December 25, 2019 and January 10, 2020, under the enhanced subtropical high, when the double peak in wildfire evolution was favored by sustained low humidity and two synchronous increases in temperature and wind.

Background: Excessive daytime sleepiness is a common and early symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The subcortical wake-promoting neurons in the lateral hypothalamic area, tuberomammillary nucleus (TMN), and locus coeruleus synchronize to maintain wakefulness/arousal. Although significant neuronal decline occurs in wake-promoting regions, the TMN histaminergic neurons remain relatively more intact than orexinergic and nor-adrenergic neurons.

Current temporal studies of DNA replication are either low-resolution or require complex cell synchronisation and/or sorting procedures. Here we introduce Nanotiming, a single-molecule, nanopore sequencing-based method producing high-resolution, telomere-to-telomere replication timing (RT) profiles of eukaryotic genomes by interrogating changes in intracellular dTTP concentration during S phase through competition with its analogue bromodeoxyuridine triphosphate (BrdUTP) for incorporation into replicating DNA. This solely demands the labelling of asynchronously growing cells with an innocuous dose of BrdU during one doubling time followed by BrdU quantification along nanopore reads.

Hafnium (Hf)-based nanoscale metal-organic layers (MOLs) enhance radiotherapeutic effects of tissue-penetrating X-rays via a unique radiotherapy-radiodynamic therapy (RT-RDT) process through efficient generation of hydroxy radical (RT) and singlet oxygen (RDT). However, their radiotherapeutic efficacy is limited by hypoxia in deep-seated tumors and short half-lives of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein the conjugation of a nitric oxide (NO) donor, S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP), to the Hf secondary building units (SBUs) of Hf-5,5'-di-p-benzoatoporphyrin MOL is reported to afford SNAP/MOL for enhanced cancer radiotherapy.

Background: The Resection and Partial Liver Transplantation with Delayed Total Hepatectomy (RAPID) procedure for unresectable colorectal liver metastases (uCRLM) has renewed interest by increasing, in selected cases, patients' long-term survival. Initially described using deceased donor graft, this technique evolved to living donors, tackling organ-shortage issues, allowing better scheduling, and reducing liver failure risk.

Methods: A 50-year-old patient presented 18 months earlier with a colic adenocarcinoma with synchronous uCRLM.
