In April 2008 an avian influenza outbreak was diagnosed in Primorsky Krai, Russia, during the spring migration of wild birds, and A/Chicken/Primorsky/85/08 H5N1 isolate was recovered. The virus had more than 99% genetic identity with A/Whooper Swan/Hokkaido/1/08 H5N1 and A/Whooper Swan/Hokkaido/2/08 H5N1 viruses that were isolated in April 2008 in Japan. The amino acid sequence of the hemagglutinin cleavage site (PQRERRRKRGLF) and intravenous pathotyping index value (IVPI 2.80) were determined; on this basis the virus was characterized as highly pathogenic. The hemagglutinin gene of the virus was shown to belong to clade 2.3.2 while other genes (PB1, PB2, PA, NP, NA, M, NS) were characteristic of Fujian-like sublineage, recovered in the territory of Russia for the first time.

Many HPAI outbreaks in domestic birds were clustered in areas with high poultry density and characterised by secondary farm-to-farm spread. Waterfowl, particularly the mute swan, were primarily affected during this reporting period, with HPAI virus detections focused on south-eastern Europe.

Introduction: While it remains impossible to predict the timing of the next influenza pandemic, novel avian influenza A viruses continue to be considered a significant threat.
Methods: A Phase II study was conducted in healthy adults aged 18-64 years to assess the safety and immunogenicity of two intramuscular doses of pre-pandemic 2017 influenza A(H7N9) inactivated vaccine administered 21 days apart. Participants were randomized (n = 105 in each of Arms 1-3) to receive 3.

To bolster the capacity for managing potential infectious diseases in the future, it is critical to develop specific antiviral drugs that can be rapidly designed and delivered precisely. Herein, a CRISPR/Cas13d system for broad-spectrum targeting of influenza A virus (IAV) from human, avian, and swine sources is designed, incorporating Cas13d mRNA and a tandem CRISPR RNA (crRNA) specific for the highly conserved regions of viral polymerase acidic (PA), nucleoprotein (NP), and matrix (M) gene segments, respectively. Given that the virus targets cells with specific receptors but is not limited to a single organ, a Susceptible Cell Selective Delivery (SCSD) system is developed by modifying a lipid nanoparticle with a peptide mimicking the function of the hemagglutinin of influenza virus to target sialic acid receptors.

Unlabelled: The tonsils have been identified as a site of replication for Epstein-Barr virus, adenovirus, human papillomavirus, and other respiratory viruses. Human tonsil epithelial cells (HTECs) are a heterogeneous group of actively differentiating cells. Here, we investigated the cellular features and susceptibility of differentiated HTECs to specific influenza viruses, including expression of avian-type and mammalian-type sialic acid (SA) receptors, viral replication dynamics, and the associated cytokine secretion profiles.
