We report the design of highly efficient optical antennas employing a judicious synthesis of metallic and dielectric materials. In the proposed scheme, a pair of metallic coupled nanoparticles permits large enhancements in both excitation strength and radiative decay rates, while a high refractive index dielectric microsphere is employed to efficiently collect light without spoiling the emitter quantum efficiency. Our simulations indicate potential fluorescence rate enhancements of 3 orders of magnitude over the entire optical frequency range.

We obtain exact analytic expressions for (i) the electromagnetic energy radial density within and outside a multilayered sphere and (ii) the total electromagnetic energy stored within its core and each of its shells. Explicit expressions for the special cases of lossless core and shell are also provided. The general solution is based on the compact recursive transfer-matrix method, and its validity includes also magnetic media.

Compact metallo-dielectric hybrid clusters with subwavelength dimensions are fabricated by template guided self-assembly. Elastic and inelastic scattering spectroscopy and electromagnetic simulations reveal that hybrid clusters comprising TiO(2) nanoparticles on top of a cluster of strongly coupled gold nanoparticles harness synergistic electromagnetic interactions between the building blocks. This results in a boost of the peak electric field intensity and a redistribution of the field in the ambient medium.

Filter characteristics of metallo-dielectric photonic crystal slabs are analyzed using the Multiple Multipole Program combined with the Model-Based Parameter Estimation technique. This approach takes losses and material dispersion into account and provides highly accurate results at short computation time. Starting from this analysis, different ultra-compact band pass filters for telecommunication wavelengths are designed.
