Syringoid eccrine carcinoma.

Published: May 1991

Eccrine carcinomas are locally aggressive and have an infiltrative growth pattern. They have a variable clinical appearance and a diversity of histologic findings that often make the diagnosis difficult. The histologic findings, together with immunoperoxidase and enzyme histochemical studies, usually allow differentiation between eccrine carcinomas, other cutaneous neoplasms, and visceral adenocarcinomas with skin metastases. Provided there is no evidence of distant metastases, surgical excision is the treatment of choice. We report a case of syringoid eccrine carcinoma that was treated with Mohs micrographic surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • - Syringoid eccrine carcinoma (SEC) is a rare and aggressive skin cancer that typically appears as nodules or plaques, often in the head, neck, or trunk, making it challenging to diagnose due to its varied appearance.
  • - The cancer exhibits unique growth patterns characterized by infiltrative behavior and potential to spread, with histological features resembling syringomas and showing ductular differentiation.
  • - This text discusses a rare case of SEC found in the nipple of a 51-year-old male, marking only the second documented instance of this condition in a male patient, and it was complicated by metastasis to the axillary lymph nodes.

Department of Dermatopathology, St John's Institute of Dermatology, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London, United Kingdom.

Eccrine duct fibroadenomatosis is a reactive histological phenomenon observed in a variety of inflammatory and neoplastic pathologies. We report a case of a ROS1 fusion angiomatoid Spitz nevus with associated acrosyringeal hyperplasia and a syringoma-like ductal proliferation in a young female patient.

Neoplasms of sweat glands and the breast may be morphologically and immunophenotypically similar. A recent study showed that TRPS1 staining is a highly sensitive and specific marker for breast carcinoma. In this study, we analyzed TRPS1 expression in a spectrum of cutaneous sweat gland tumors.
