Activin signaling is essential for proper embryonic, skeletal muscle, and reproductive development. Duplication of the pathway in teleost fish has enabled diversification of gene function across the pathway but how gene duplication influences the function of activin signaling in non-mammalian species is poorly understood. Full characterization of activin receptor signaling pathway expression was performed across embryonic development and during early skeletal muscle growth in rainbow trout (RBT, Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Inbred species are useful resources for a variety of biomedical research applications. To create isogenic zebrafish, it is feasible to stop meiosis II (repeatedly) or mitosis (two times) in a haploid embryo by applying pressure or by delivering a heat shock, respectively. In this study, to improve the repeatability, we suggest a less complicated approach based on sperm ultraviolet-C (UV-C) exposure for a shorter period followed by heat shock at various temperatures, eliminating the use of pressure in meiotic therapy since heat shock is more accessible to laboratories.

To investigate the distant hybridization and gynogenesis between Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and Jaguar cichlid Parachromis managuensis, reciprocal crossing was first performed between the two species. No offspring, however, were viable when there were these hybridizations. Gynogenesis was induced in O.

This is the first report of reproduction of a gynogenetic female Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) and subsequent production of viable offspring with differentiated gonads. Gonads were sampled twice from 30 randomly selected individuals. Gonadal fragments were examined histologically to identify the sex ratio and the sexual maturation stage.

Although most unicellular organisms reproduce asexually, most multicellular eukaryotes are obligately sexual. This implies that there are strong barriers that prevent the origin or maintenance of asexuality arising from an obligately sexual ancestor. By studying rare asexual animal species we can gain a better understanding of the circumstances that facilitate their evolution from a sexual ancestor.
