Published: April 2010

CuO-nanoparticles were found to be an excellent heterogeneous catalyst for C-arylation of active methylene compounds using various aryl halides. The products were obtained in good to excellent yield. The catalyst can be recovered and reused for four cycles with almost no loss in activity.

Diethyl acetamidomalonate (DEAM) has been widely used for the synthesis of α-amino acids via C-alkylation under basic conditions followed by hydrolysis/decarboxylation. In contrast, the C-arylation of this reagent remains undeveloped. Herein, we report a novel strategy for the synthesis of racemic α-arylglycines based on the selective arylation of DEAM with diaryliodonium salts under mild, transition metal-free conditions.

While cage C-arylation reactions using strong bases are among the most frequently used transformations in carborane chemistry, there has been no general solution to allow for the use of weak bases in the reaction. Moreover, base-metal-promoted C-H heteroarylation with base-sensitive heteroaryl halides remained elusive. Herein, copper-mediated cage C-H (hetero)arylation has been achieved without the need for strong bases, leading to the facile synthesis of a wide range of C-(hetero)arylated carboranes in good to excellent yields with a broad substrate scope and good functional group compatibility.

Plasmon-mediated chemical reaction (PMCR) is a highly attractive field of research. Here we report in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) monitoring of plasmonic-mediated SS bond-forming reaction. The reaction is thought to be a self-coupling reaction proceeding by photoinduced aromatic SC bond arylation.

Reactions allowing chemodivergence prove to be attractive strategies in synthetic organic chemistry. We herein described a highly practical, transition-metal-free, highly regioselective and chemodivergent cascade reaction controlled by fluorine sources, which involved a [3 + 2] cycloaddition or -arylation process between aryne precursors and 3-aminomaleimides. These two pathways led to a wide scope of structurally diverse pyrrolo[3,4-]indoles (19 examples) and 3-arylated maleimides (25 examples) in good-to-excellent yields.

The elucidation of the -arylation of active methylene compounds under visible light conditions without a photocatalyst presents an intellectual challenge. The photo-induced -arylation of active methylene compounds electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes shows a strategic path for the synthesis of pharmacologically relevant compounds. This expansive and efficacious methodology facilitates -arylation under environmentally conscientious conditions, exhibiting exemplary compatibility with diverse functional groups and yielding numerous compounds.
