Despite its recognition as a key dimension of healthcare quality, it is often unclear what exactly patient-centeredness means. A generally accepted measurement model of patient-centeredness is still nonexistent, current operational definitions lack sufficient specificity to inform providers how it relates to outcomes, and the influence of patient-centeredness on pediatric patients and families has not been quantified. This study demonstrates that patient-centeredness is a measurable ability of pediatricians that increases family trust. As an ability, it is teachable. The study offers an evidence-based model for future research with specific implications for quality measurement and improvement in the outpatient pediatrician's office.

Background: Reducing perinatal HIV transmission and optimizing maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes in high HIV prevalence settings is an urgent, but complex, priority. Extant interventions over-emphasize individual-level provider and patient behaviors, and neglect critical health systems-level changes. The 'Integrated Management Team to Improve Maternal-Child Outcomes (IMPROVE)' study implemented a three-part, patient-centered, health-systems-level intervention to improve MCH and HIV outcomes in Lesotho.

Purpose: Investigating associations between group-based medical mistrust (GBMM) and perceptions of patient-provider encounters can identify one mechanism through which GBMM may influence health outcomes and serve as a barrier to equitable health care. This study investigated associations between GBMM reported by caregivers of children with a possible genetic condition and caregivers' and providers' perceptions of a specialty care appointment discussing diagnostic plans.
Methods: Caregivers (N = 177) completed the GBMM scale and other measures before their child's initial specialty clinic visit.

Hospital care has consolidated rapidly into health systems in the United States. Infants born very preterm are among the most vulnerable pediatric populations, accounting for the majority of infant deaths each year. The pediatric health care delivery system for infants is unique as the birth hospitalization includes 2 patients, the mother and the infant.

Background And Objectives: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continue to experience significant delays in diagnosis and interventions. One of the main factors contributing to this delay is a shortage of developmental-behavioral specialists. Diagnostic evaluation of ASD by primary care pediatricians (PCPs) has been shown to be reliable and to decrease the interval from first concern to diagnosis.
