Background: The relationship between treatment time, ultrafiltration rate (UFR) and inflammation has received limited exploration so far.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional cohort study of 12 hemodialysis clinics. Statistical models explored the association of multiple patient- and dialysis-specific covariates with low albumin (5 mg/dl) and calculated the ORs and 95% CIs.

Results: 616 patients with a mean age of 60.9 +/- 14.4 years participated in our study. Mean treatment time was 237.3 +/- 23.8 min and mean UFR was 7.0 +/- 4.0 ml/kg/h. In stepwise logistic regression, treatment time >4 h reduced the risk of low albumin (OR 0.397, 95% CI 0.235-0.672, p < 0.001). Congestive heart failure (OR 1.634, 95% CI 1.154-2.312, p = 0.006) and acute infection (OR 1.799, 95% CI 1.059-3.056, p = 0.03) were significant correlates of the risk of high CRP. There was no association between UFR and either CRP or albumin.

Conclusion: Treatment time had a significant cross-sectional association with serum albumin but not with CRP.

Background: The growing use of leadless pacemaker (LP) technology requires safe and effective solutions for retrieving and removing these devices over the long term.

Objectives: This study sought to evaluate retrieval and removal of an active helix-fixation LP studied in worldwide regulatory clinical trials.

Methods: Subjects enrolled in the LEADLESS II phase 1 investigational device exemption, LEADLESS Observational, or LEADLESS Japan trials with an attempted LP retrieval at least 6 weeks postimplantation were included.

Rectangular Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Monophasic vs Biphasic Stimulation for Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.

Neuromodulation

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Weill Institute for Neurosciences, University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA.

Objectives: Biphasic sinusoidal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation treatment that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Recent advances suggest that standard rTMS may be improved by altering the pulse shape; however, there is a paucity of research investigating pulse shape, owing primarily to the technologic limitations of currently available devices. This pilot study examined the feasibility, tolerability, and preliminary efficacy of biphasic and monophasic rectangular rTMS for TRD.

This was an original article, and the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of bipolar transurethral plasma kinetic prostatectomy (TUPKP) on urodynamics and sexual function in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients. One hundred and four BPH patients were divided into a control group and an intervention group. The control group received transurethral resection of prostate, while the intervention group received TUKEP.

This study examined the effects of a combination of plan-do-check-action (PDCA) and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) on patients undergoing cesarean section. One hundred and thirty patients undergoing caesarean section at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University comprised the study group. They were randomly divided into a control group (CG) and an intervention group (IG).

The study was designed to appraise the effects of early antibiotic administration on reproductive tract infections and fetal membrane cell scorching in instances of premature rupture of membranes (PROM). A total of 107 pregnant women diagnosed with PROM between July 2020 and June 2022 were randomly assigned to two groups: the Intervention (n=54), where ampicillin were administered within 24 hours of PROM onset, and the control group (n=53), where ampicillin were given 24-48 hours after PROM. Maternal and neonatal outcomes, incidence of reproductive tract infections, and fetal membrane cell scorching indicators (Caspase-1, Caspase -3, Caspase-9 and IL-β) were compared.
