In this study, we investigated the influence of host genetics and environmental microbiomes on the early gut microbiome of Atlantic salmon. We aimed at rearing the fish in either r- or K-selected environments, where the r-selected environment would be expected to be dominated by fast-growing opportunistic bacteria and thus represent more detrimental microbial environment than the K-selected water. Eggs from both wild and aquaculture strains of Atlantic salmon were hatched under germ-free conditions.

Immune-cell signatures of persistent inflammation, immunosuppression, and catabolism syndrome after sepsis.

Med

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology, Zhongshan Hospital Fudan University, Shanghai 200032, China; Laboratory of Perioperative Stress and Protection, Shanghai 200032, China. Electronic address:

Background: Management of persistent inflammation, immunosuppression, and catabolism syndrome (PICS) after sepsis remains challenging for patients in the intensive care unit, experiencing poor quality of life and death. However, immune-cell signatures in patients with PICS after sepsis remain unclear.

Methods: We determined immune-cell signatures of PICS after sepsis at single-cell resolution.

Unveiling the P-solubilizing potential of bacteria enriched from natural colonies of Red Sea Trichodesmium spp.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

The Interuniversity Institute for Marine Sciences in Eilat, Eilat, Israel; The Fredy and Nadine Herrmann Institute of Earth Sciences, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

Phosphorus (P) is pivotal for all organisms, yet its availability is, particularly in the marine habitat, limited. Natural, puff-shaped colonies of Trichodesmium, a genus of diazotrophic cyanobacteria abundant in the Red Sea, have been demonstrated to capture and centre dust particles. While this particle mining strategy is considered to help evade nutrient limitation, details behind the mechanism remain elusive.
