A new shape memory clamp in small bone surgery.

Published: October 2012

A new internal fixative made form a titanium-nickel (TiNi) alloy having shape memory properties has been investigated and manufactured in cooperation between the Municipal Hospital Ostrava-Fifejdy, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the TU of Ostrava, Institute of Materials Engineering. The shape memory TiNi clamps with optimized parameters were designed after systematic study and development of required substructure. Experiments with animals supported the philosophy of the TiNi memory clamps application in small bone surgery. The conclusion drawn from preclinical, clinical, radiological and histological evidence from a total of 64 patients is that our new clamps proved to meet both contemporary theoretical demands and practical needs. Key words: shape memory alloy, small bone fragments osteosynthesis.

The distinct timescales of synaptic plasticity and neural activity dynamics play an important role in the brain's learning and memory systems. Activity-dependent plasticity reshapes neural circuit architecture, determining spontaneous and stimulus-encoding spatiotemporal patterns of neural activity. Neural activity bumps maintain short term memories of continuous parameter values, emerging in spatially organized models with short-range excitation and long-range inhibition.

Oncolytic viruses (OVs) emerge as a promising cancer immunotherapy. However, the temporal impact on tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment, and the nature of anti-tumor immunity post-therapy remain largely unclear. Here we report that CD4 T cells are required for durable tumor control in syngeneic murine models of glioblastoma multiforme after treatment with an oncolytic herpes simplex virus (oHSV) engineered to express IL-12.

Visuospatial working memory (VSWM) is crucial for navigating complex environments and is known to decline with ageing. The Free-Movement Pattern (FMP) Y-maze, used in animal studies, provides a robust paradigm for assessing VSWM via analyses of individual differences in repeated alternating sequences of left (L) and right (R) responses (LRLR, etc.), the predominant search pattern in many species.

Electric-field-induced shape memory effect has potential applications in electromechanical actuator. Here, this study proposes the a phase structure design routine in (1-x)(75NaBiTiO-25SrTiO)-xPbTiO ceramics to obtain large electromechanical response and shape memory effect. It is found that the shape memory effect is closely related to the bending deformation induced by asymmetric polarization between positive and negative electrodes, which is resulted from the reductions of Bi and Pb because of electron injection from negative electrode.
