Background: The skull base is a surgically complex unit and is often only accessible via combined access routes. Newly developed surgical techniques using microsurgical visualization procedures and active instruments ("powered instruments") as well as multiport accesses enable new, less traumatic surgical corridors. This requires close interdisciplinary cooperation between ENT and neurosurgeons.

CT scan reveals traumatic intracranial abnormalities in fewer than 10% of patients following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Management policy in these patients is not clear. Clinical or radiological deterioration occurs in 10-20% of this risk group, usually within 24 hours and often without neurosurgical consequences.

Objective: The extended endoscopic endonasal transtuberculum transplanum approach is currently used for the surgical treatment of selected midline anterior skull base lesions. Nevertheless, the possibility of accessing the lateral aspects of the planum sphenoidale could represent a limitation for such an approach. To the authors' knowledge, a clear definition of the eventual anatomical boundaries has not been delineated.

Sports-related concussion (SRC) is an important public health issue. Although standardized assessment tools are useful in the clinical management of acute concussion, the underlying pathophysiology of SRC and the time course of physiological recovery after injury remain unclear. In this study, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to detect white matter alterations in football players within 48 h after SRC.

Background: Rhinoliquorrhoea suggests a communication between the subarachnoid space and the sinonasal tract. Clinical presentation includes clear nasal discharge, headache, pneumocephalus, meningitis or brain abscess. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks are mostly of traumatic origin (skull base fractures), iatrogenic (secondary to endoscopic endonasal surgery) or associated with tumour aetiology.
