Background: Routine serial hematocrit measurements are a component of the trauma evaluation for patients without serious injury identified on initial evaluation. We sought to determine whether serial hematocrit testing was useful in detecting significant intra-abdominal injuries in trauma patients in our observation unit.
Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of all trauma patients placed in our observation unit over a 14-month period. Patients had received trauma surgery evaluation before placement in the observation unit and routinely received serial hematocrit testing (>or=2 hematocrit levels) while in the observation unit. We compared trauma patients with a hematocrit drop of 5 points or more to those without a significant hematocrit drop.
Results: Three hundred sixty-five trauma patients were placed in the observation unit, and 310 patients (85%) had at least 2 hematocrits drawn during their stay. Of these patients, 20.6% had a hematocrit drop of 5 or more. Of patients with the hematocrit change, 18.8% were admitted to an inpatient unit from the observation unit compared to 9.3% of patients without a significant hematocrit change (P = .034). In one of these patients who had a computed tomography scan before observation admission, which demonstrated free fluid, the hematocrit drop assisted in diagnosing significant intra-abdominal injury.
Conclusion: Although serial hematocrit testing may be useful in specific situations, routine use of serial hematocrit testing in trauma patients at a level I trauma center's observation unit did not significantly aid in the detection of occult injury.

Background: The Immunoglobulin Heavy Chain (IGH) genomic region is responsible for the production of circulating antibodies and warrants careful investigation for its association with COVID-19 characteristics. Multiple allelic variants within and across different IGH gene segments form a limited set of haplotypes. Previous studies have shown associations between some of these haplotypes and clinical outcomes of COVID-19.

With the escalating demand for exploration within confined spaces, bionic design methodologies have attracted considerable attention from researchers, primarily due to the intrinsic limitations of human access to hazardous environments. However, contemporary bionic robots primarily attain linear motion through the axial radial deformation of their body segments, thereby lacking the upright functionality that is characteristic of these organisms. In response to the limitations associated with current bionic earthworm robots concerning upright capability and stiffness modulation, we propose an innovative bionic robot that incorporates upright functionality and programmable stiffness.

Exposure to harmful microbiomes and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can negatively affect human health. However, the contribution of vegetation and soils to the airborne microbiota transferred indoors (AMTI) remains unclear. We used our newly-developed airborne microbial sampler (VenTube) to collect AMTI samples from 72 neighborhoods in Shanghai.

Background: In an Italian cohort of lupus podocytopathy patients, we aimed to characterize the presenting features, therapy, and outcomes, and explore differences between relapsing and non-relapsing patients.
Methods: We identified 29 patients with lupus podocytopathy from 1994 to 2023 in 11 Italian Nephrology/Rheumatology Units, and divided them into two groups: relapsing and non-relapsing. Given the limited sample size, a p-value ≤ 0.
