Bipolar Camouflage: A Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome Case Report.

The cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome is a neuropsychiatric syndrome composed of affective (anxiety, depression, euphoria, and emotional lability) and cognitive symptoms (executive, attentional, and visuospatial deficits) that was described in the 1990s. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman with a history of an acute neurological episode at the age of 28, after which she reported a change in personality, brief and alternating periods of depression, hypomania, and mixed episodes, and cognitive impairment that had a major impact on her personal and occupational level of functioning. She was initially diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but a clinical, neuropsychological, and imaging re-evaluation prompted a diagnostic reconsideration in favor of a cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome.

Background: Several reports have suggested that the bipolar radiofrequency ablation (RFA) system is useful for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We evaluated the efficacy and safety of the bipolar RFA system for HCC treatment in the real-world setting.
Methods: A total of 155 patients with 224 HCC tumors were enrolled.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition introduced the specifier "with mixed features" including 3 or more nonoverlapping typical manic symptoms during a major depressive episode in bipolar disorder type I or II or unipolar major depressive disorder. Excluding overlapping excitatory symptoms, which are frequently observed in mixed depression, leaves many patients with mixed depression undiagnosed. As a consequence, alternative diagnostic criteria have been proposed, claiming for the inclusion in the rubric of mixed features the following symptoms: psychomotor agitation, mood lability, and aggressiveness.

Background: Impulsivity is commonly assessed using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). Some studies challenged the reliability of its three dimensional structure and proposed a bi-dimensional structure.
Methods: The psychometric reliability of the BIS-11 scale was studied in a sample of 580 euthymic bipolar patients.

Lithium use for the treatment of mood disorders remains quite low, particularly in the United States compared with some European countries. Mogens Schou pioneered the study of lithium for prophylaxis of the recurrent mood disorder and encouraged its greater use. In an effort to further address the appropriate role of this drug, the multiple assets of lithium beyond its well-known antimanic effect are reviewed, and a brief summary of its side effects is outlined.
