A numerical method (NM) is developed to characterize radiative transfer in a moderately dense particle population, i.e., a suspension of concentration of <1-10% by volume. It assumes that the particles scatter in accord with the Mie equations, that the propagation of light over short distances is in accord with the exponential transmission law, and that the light flows in many (thirty-six) directions. For representative systems, predictions of the Kubelka-Munk theory (KMT) are compared with those of the NM; partial agreement is found. While this theory can be a useful tool, radiative transport in representative samples is found not to obey strictly either the assumptions for writing the basic differential equations of the KMT or those for solving them. The movement of diffuse light through an attenuating system is found to often collimate it, not to make it more diffuse as expected. This effect causes errors in absolute KMT predictions. New transport equations, like Schuster's, with four parameters instead of two are written and solved to obtain some new KMT equations. Their predictions are compared with those of the NM.

Symmetrical drug-related intertriginous and flexural exanthema (SDRIFE) is a rare, symmetrical skin eruption triggered by various medications, predominantly beta-lactam antibiotics. We report the case of a 69-year-old male with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis who developed SDRIFE following the seventh intravenous administration of infliximab. The patient presented with symmetrical, pruritic erythema in the cubital and popliteal fossae, groins, gluteal and retroauricular regions without systemic involvement.

The Pearl River Estuary (PRE) has experienced an influx of metals and nutrients, predominantly from the Pearl River, which has led to a potential threat to the estuarine ecosystem. In this study, sediment samples were densely collected to clarify the accumulation, and source contributions of heavy metals (namely Hg, Zn, Cu, As, Pb, Cd, and Cr) in the PRE. The spatial distributions of these metals exhibited significant differences, with higher values detected in the offshore areas and lower values further away.

Ferric chloride mediated dearomative spirocyclization of biaryl ynones for the synthesis of new series of densely functionalized 3,3-spiroindanone derivatives has been reported. This study is the first to describe the regioselective synthesis of a five-membered ring from biaryl ynones. The scope of the reaction is broad and the spirocyclic products were obtained in moderate to good yields (up to 87%) and with high stereoselectivities.
