Based on the practical experience in design and operation of three full-scale membrane bioreactors (MBR) for municipal wastewater treatment that were commissioned since 1999, an overview on the different design concepts that were applied to the three MBR plants is given. The investment costs and the energy consumption of the MBRs and conventional activated sludge (CAS) plants (with and without tertiary treatment) in the Erft river region are compared. It is found that the specific investment costs of the MBR plants are lower than those of comparable CAS with tertiary treatment. A comparison of the specific energy demand of MBRs and conventional WWTPs is given. The structure of the MBRs actual operational costs is analysed. It can be seen that energy consumption is only responsible for one quarter to one third of all operational expenses. Based on a rough design and empirical cost data, a cost comparison of a full-scale MBR and a CAS is carried out. In this example the CAS employs a sand filtration and a disinfection in order to achieve comparable effluent quality. The influence of membrane lifetime on life cycle cost is assessed.

The archaeal class is widely and abundantly distributed in anoxic habitats. Metagenomic studies have suggested that they are mixotrophic, capable of CO fixation and heterotrophic growth, and involved in acetogenesis and lignin degradation. We analyzed 35 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), including the first complete circularized MAG (cMAG) of the Bathy-6 subgroup, from the metagenomes of three full-scale pulp and paper mill anaerobic digesters and three laboratory methanogenic enrichment cultures maintained on pre-treated poplar.

This study investigated membrane fouling issues associated with the operation of a submerged ultrafiltration membrane in a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) and optimized the associated chemical cleaning strategies. By analyzing the surface components of the membrane foulant and the compositions of the membrane cleaning solution, the primary causes of membrane fouling were identified. Membrane fouling control strategies suitable for the DWTP were evaluated through chemical cleaning tests conducted for bench-scale, full-scale, and engineering cases.

Background: The original TriHex combination-Tripeptide-1 and Hexapeptide-12 (TriHex) encompasses a peptide combination selected for its ability to modulate the extracellular matrix (ECM) by progressively eliminating clumped collagen and elastin fragments and then stimulating replacement with new collagen and elastin. Incorporation of a proprietary, patent-pending Octapeptide-45 (Octa) to the TriHex original provides potential for added benefit based on the peptide's capacity to stimulate hyaluronic acid (HA) and its anticipated added benefit in wound healing. This is named TriHex 2.

Cellulose acetate (CA) mixed-matrix membranes incorporating polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), bentonite (B or Ben), graphene oxide (GO), and titanium dioxide (TiO) were prepared by the phase inversion separation technique for oil/water separation. An investigation was performed where the mixed-matrix membrane was tested for the separation performance of hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface properties. An ultrafiltration experiment at the laboratory scale was used to test dead-end ultrafiltration models developed for the treatment performances of oily wastewater under dynamic full-scale operating conditions.

The incorporation of biochar can significantly enhance the performance of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs), achieving up to a 95 % increase in pollutant removal efficiency and an 86 % improvement in methane production. Algae biochar, in particular, shows great promise as an effective additive in AnMBR systems because of its low cost (approximately $0.470/kg) and the abundance of raw material sources.
