Aqueous extracts of and as promising sources of antibiofilm compounds against mucoid and small colony variants of and .

Biofilm

June 2025

Centre of Biological Engineering, LIBRO - Laboratório de Investigação em Biofilmes Rosário Oliveira, University of Minho, Campus de Gualtar, Braga, 4710-057, Portugal.

Bacterial biofilms formed by and pose significant challenges in treating cystic fibrosis (CF) airway infections due to their resistance to antibiotics. New therapeutic approaches are urgently needed to treat these chronic infections. This study aimed to investigate the antibiofilm potential of various plant extracts, specifically targeting mucoid and small colony variants of and and strains.

Synergistic antimicrobial efficacy of phage cocktails and essential oils against Escherichia coli.

Microb Pathog

January 2025

Future Food Laboratory, Innovation Center of Yangtze River Delta, Zhejiang University, Jiaxing, Zhejiang 314100, China; Department of Biomedical Science, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon, Gangwon 24341, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

This study was designed to evaluate the combined antimicrobial activity of selected phage cocktail (MS2+T7 phages) and essential oils (cinnamon, clove, oregano, and thymol) against Escherichia coli ATCC 15597. To select most effective phages, the lytic abilities of individual phages (MS2, phiX174, and T7) and their phage combinations were assessed using the phage spot test and plaque assay at various multiplicity of infections (MOIs) ranging from 0.01 to 100.

In an era dominated by the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance, it is increasingly important to look for alternatives to synthetic antibiotics. In light of these considerations, the synergistic use of essential oils and Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) seems a viable strategy. In this study, we assessed the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) and Fractional Inhibitory Concentration (FIC) of three Essential Oils (EOs): winter savory (), bergamot () and cinnamon () and of the insect antimicrobial peptide Cecropin A (CecA), alone and in combination with EOs, against two Gram-negative ATCC bacterial strains: and serovar Typhimurium.

The volatility, instability, and water insolubility of essential oil (CLEO) limit its practical applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. CLEO nanoemulsions (CLNEs) were formulated and characterized to overcome the aforementioned issues. The volatile compounds of CLEO were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The escalating global concern regarding plastic waste accumulation and its detrimental environmental impact has driven the exploration of sustainable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastics. This study investigates the development of antimicrobial blends of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) derived from plastic waste and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHB), further enhanced with essential oils. The antimicrobial activity of the resulting BNC/PHB blends was tested in vitro against , , and .
