A novel branched peptide type ligand consisting of three lysines as branching units and four histidines as functional groups has been designed and prepared by solid phase peptide synthesis. The N-terminal histidines offer eight primary protonation/metal ion binding sites: four amino and four imidazole groups, capable of binding up to two metal ions. We examined the protonation equilibria, and the complex formation processes with copper(II) and zinc(II) ions in c(M):c(L) = 1:1 and 2:1 initial concentration ratio in aqueous solutions. The composition, speciation and the solution structure of the complexes have been determined by combined pH-potentiometric titrations, visible absorption, circular dichroism and NMR spectroscopy. In the case of both metal ions, mono- and dimetallic complexes formed with bis-histamine type coordination as the main species. While above pH 8 the precipitation of a neutral complex was observed for both metal ions, in the copper(II) containing systems it dissolved in alkaline solutions (pH > 11.0). The resulting complex in an equimolar system displays deprotonated amide-nitrogen coordination, with fused five-membered chelate rings around the metal ion in [CuLH(-3)](-). At the same time, only one copper(II) is able to coordinate in the same manner in the [Cu(2)LH(-5)](-) species. The second metal ion is probably surrounded by two amide nitrogens and two others either from amino or imidazole donor groups.

Understanding the adsorption behavior of intermediates at interfaces is crucial for various heterogeneous systems, but less attention has been paid to metal species. This study investigates the manipulation of Co spin states in ZnCoO spinel oxides and establishes their impact on metal ion adsorption. Using electrochemical sensing as a metric, we reveal a quasi-linear relationship between the adsorption affinity of metal ions and the high-spin state fraction of Co sites.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid-state polymer electrolyte (SPE) is a promising candidate for the next generation of safer lithium-metal batteries. However, the serious side reaction between PEO and lithium metal and the uneven deposition of lithium ions lead to the growth of lithium dendrites and the rapid decline of battery cycle life. Building a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer is considered to be an effective means to solve the above problems.

Recently, ionic thermoelectric supercapacitors have gained attention because of their high open circuit voltages, even for ions that are redox inactive. As a source of open circuit voltage (electromotive force), an asymmetry in electric double layers developed by the adsorption of ions at the electrode surfaces kept at different temperatures has previously been proposed. As another source, the Eastman entropy of transfer, which is related to the Soret coefficient, has been considered.

In this work, selenium (IV) ions were adsorbed from aqueous solutions by the strongly basic anion exchange resin Amberlite IRA-400. The morphology of the resin before and after Se(IV) sorption was investigated using different techniques such as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To determine the ideal sorption conditions, a batch approach was used to examine the variables affecting Se(IV) sorption performance, including pH, shaking time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ion concentration, and temperature.

This paper is devoted to the investigation of the plasmonic effect of metal nanoparticles (NPs) formed on the surface of the YAG: Bi, Ce, Yb phosphors in a temperature range between 4 and 300 K. Combination of a thin conversion layer with silver plasmonic nanostructures leads to increase of sensitizer absorption and emission efficiency. Enhancement of Bi luminescence in YAG epitaxial films with Ag NPs was observed upon cooling the samples below 200 K.
