Cracking CRAC.

Nat Cell Biol

Published: May 2010

CRACR2A is a newly discovered Ca-binding protein that regulates store-operated Ca entry (SOCE). CRACR2A enhances SOCE by promoting the binding of the endoplasmic reticulum Ca sensor STIM to Orai, a Ca channel located in the plasma membrane. As intracellular Ca levels rise, CRACR2A binds Ca and triggers SOCE inactivation by dissociating from the Orai–STIM complex.

This study emphasizes tuning the synthesis conditions of MFI zeolites to achieve better catalytic properties by optimizing the mesoporosity, the balance between Brønsted and Lewis sites, and the zeolite particle sizes. The MFI zeolites were hydrothermally synthesized at various temperatures employing different silica sources. The synthesis temperature was varied between 110 to 180 °C at constant synthesis time (15 h).

CRACking the Molecular Regulatory Mechanism of SOCE during Platelet Activation in Thrombo-Occlusive Diseases.

Cells

Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Tübingen, 72076 Tübingen, Germany.

Thrombo-occlusive diseases such as myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke and deep vein thrombosis with subsequent pulmonary embolism still represent a major health burden worldwide. Besides the cells of the vasculature or other hematopoietic cells, platelets are primarily responsible for the development and progression of an occluding thrombus. The activation and function of platelets crucially depend on free cytosolic calcium (Ca) as second messenger, which modulates platelet secretion, aggregation and thrombus formation.

This paper is the outcome of experiments on the shear performance of reinforced concrete beams with approved composite-recycled aggregates. The strength grade of composite-recycled aggregate concrete (CRAC) was between 30 MPa and 60 MPa. The shear span-to-depth ratio varied from 1 to 3.

To promote the engineering application of recycled aggregate for concrete production with good adaptability and economic efficiency, this paper performed a campaign to investigate the flexural performance of steel fiber reinforced composite-recycled aggregate concrete (SFR-CRAC) beams matched with 500 MPa longitudinal rebars. The composite-recycled aggregate has features of the full use recycled fine aggregate and small particle recycled coarse aggregate, and the continuous grading of coarse aggregate ensured by admixing the large particle natural aggregate about 35% to 45% in mass of total coarse aggregate. The properties of SFR-CRAC have been comprehensively improved by using steel fibers.
