Published: March 1991

Neurogenic tetanic syndrome (synonyms: spasmophilia, chronic, larved, latent, hyperventilation tetany) causes problems due to its high incidence and torpid course. The aetiology is obscure. Sometimes mild disorders of the Ca and Mg metabolism are found. Carbamazepine was used in 288 patients (Biston Spofa: 3 months 600 mg/day). Subjective complaints improved by 58.7%, Chvostek's phenomenon reveded (44.3%). The typical EMG finding disappeared or improved in 73.0%. The psychotropic and antidepressive action of carbamazepine played a favourable role. No serious complications of treatment were observed. Carbamazepine inhibits effectively all manifestations of enhanced excitability of the nervous system. Its indication in the treatment of neurogenic tetanic syndrome is preferential.

Chronic amphetamine intake leads to neurogenic bladder and chronic urinary retention. The mechanism underlying persistent urinary retention is unclear. The pelvic-urethral reflex (PUR) is essential for the urethra to develop sufficient resistance to maintain urine continence, an important function of the urinary system.

Embryonic stem cells improve skeletal muscle recovery after extreme atrophy in mice.

Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology of Striated Muscle, Department of Anatomy, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Avenida Prof. Lineu Prestes 2415, São Paulo CEP 05508-000, Brazil; Laboratory of Applied Nutrition and Metabolism, School of Physical Education and Sport, Department of Biodynamics, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Introduction: We injected embryonic stem cells into mouse tibialis anterior muscles subjected to botulinum toxin injections as a model for reversible neurogenic atrophy.

Methods: Muscles were exposed to botulinum toxin for 4 weeks and allowed to recover for up to 6 weeks. At the onset of recovery, a single muscle injection of embryonic stem cells was administered.

Gastrointestinal tone; its genesis and contribution to the physical processes of digestion.

Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Background: Myogenic tone has long been recognised as an important component of gastrointestinal motility. Recent work has clarified the cellular mechanisms that engender tone and the neurogenic and mechanical stimuli that modulate it but has also highlighted cellular and regional specialisation in these mechanisms within the GI tract. Smooth muscle in all segments of the gut has the capability of latching, i.

At a short-term tetanic stimulation of fast muscle in response to subsequent single stimulation there is recorded a temporary increase of the strength of single contractions that returns to the initial background after 6--10 min. This phenomenon is called posttetanic potentiation (PTP) and is recorded only in fast muscles. The goal of the present work was a study of effect of motor innervation on the course of PTP in rat m.

Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy (EDMD) is an X-linked humero-peroneal muscular dystrophy associated with contractures and cardiomyopathy. In a 90 member family, we found 11 affected male individuals, three of whom displayed areflexia and neurogenic electromyographic changes. Muscle biopsy performed in one case demonstrated type grouping suggestive of a neurogenic disorder.
