AI Article Synopsis

  • Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is difficult due to varied symptoms and often gets diagnosed late, leading to worsened outcomes.
  • A study was conducted on 11 TBM patients from November 2006 to April 2008 to analyze their clinical presentation, management under the directly observed treatment short course (DOTS), and outcomes.
  • Results showed patients typically presented late with serious disease stages, and while DOTS was effective, there were notable side effects and complications, including deaths from hepatitis and unrelated illness.

Article Abstract

Background: Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a challenge because of the manifold clinical presentation, and diagnosis is often delayed.

Objectives: We wanted to share our experience of directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) in TBM. We did a retrospective analysis to look at the presentation, management and outcome of TBM patients from November 2006 to April 2008.

Materials And Methods: TBM was diagnosed based on clinical criteria. We excluded patients with HIV.

Results: We had 11 patients on DOTS regime. One died following hepatitis and another patient died of unrelated gastroenteritis. The only patient on daily regime died. Our patients generally presented late, at a median duration 20 days from onset of symptoms, and 50% had stage 3 disease at presentation. The median delay in diagnosis was 4.5 days.

Discussion: We found DOTS to be effective in TBM but not without side effects.

Characterizing the structures, interactions, and dynamics of molecules in their native liquid state is a long-existing challenge in chemistry, molecular science, and biophysics with profound scientific significance. Advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-based imaging techniques with the use of graphene emerged as promising tools, mainly due to their performance on spatial and temporal resolution. This review focuses on the various approaches to achieving high-resolution imaging of individual molecules and their transient interactions.

Many researchers have evaluated how characteristics of feedback may influence trainee performance, but relatively little attention has been allocated to directly assessing trainee preference for feedback characteristics and its relation to performance. Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to use a within-subject experimental design to directly assess trainee preference for the frequency of feedback and its relation to task performance. A secondary objective was to evaluate how trainee preferences varied across specific task components based on component complexity.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the formation of benign tumors in various organs, particularly in the central nervous system. We aimed to delineate the molecular profile of Turkish individuals diagnosed with TSC by analyzing the TSC1 and TSC2 genes using next-generation sequencing (NGS). Sophia Genetics' Sophia Inherited Disease Panel was used to perform NGS on 22 individuals diagnosed with TSC and to identify pathogenic variants in the TSC1 and TSC2 genes.

The introduction of defects in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective method to improve the performance of MOFs in many applications, but it also compromises the mechanical properties of MOFs. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical properties of defective MOFs becomes important for the defect engineering in MOFs. Herein, using the in situ compression tests, we directly observe very different mechanical responses in HKUST-1 MOFs with various defect concentrations.

Purpose: We aimed to characterize and further understand CSF circulation and outflow of rabbits. To our knowledge, there is no research on contrast material-enhanced MR cisternography (CE-MRC) with T1 and T2 mapping in the rabbit model using a clinical 3-T MR unit without a stereotaxic frame.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-one rabbits were included in the study.
