Coaxial Direct Ink Writing of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomers in 3D Architectures.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, 3231 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19104, USA.

Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) hold great promise for mechanochromic applications in anti-counterfeiting, smart textiles, and soft robotics, thanks to the structural color and elasticity. While CLCEs are printed via direct ink writing (DIW) to fabricate free-standing films, complex 3D structures are not fabricated due to the opposing rheological properties necessary for cholesteric alignment and multilayer stacking. Here, 3D CLCE structures are realized by utilizing coaxial DIW to print a CLC ink within a silicone ink.

As an essential B vitamin, folate participates in one‑carbon metabolism. The 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) avoids the drawbacks associated with folic acid and native folylpolyglutamate folate in food, thereby emerging as a superior alternative to folate supplement. To enhance the stability and digestibility of 5-MTHF, nanoliposome (NL) was modified using a layer-by-layer self-assembly method with chitosan (CH) and pectin (P).

Zero-Order Kinetics Release of Lamivudine from Layer-by-Layer Coated Macromolecular Prodrug Particles.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Department of Physical Chemistry and Biophysics, Pharmaceutical Faculty, Wroclaw Medical University, Borowska 211, 50-556 Wrocław, Poland.

To reduce the risk of side effects and enhance therapeutic efficiency, drug delivery systems that offer precise control over active ingredient release while minimizing burst effects are considered advantageous. In this study, a novel approach for the controlled release of lamivudine (LV) was explored through the fabrication of polyelectrolyte-coated microparticles. LV was covalently attached to poly(ε-caprolactone) via ring-opening polymerization, resulting in a macromolecular prodrug (LV-PCL) with a hydrolytic release mechanism.

A multilayer core-shell heterostructure with CoNi-LDH as the core and NiS nanosheets as the shell is deposited on MXene-coated carbon nanofibers by electrospinning and electrochemical deposition. This unique structure not only combines highly conductive and hydrophilic one-dimensional carbon nanofibers but also exposes abundant two-dimensional reactive sites and multiple ion diffusion channels to maximize material utilization, enhance electron transfer kinetics, accelerate Faraday reaction, high capacitance and strong stability. The CNNS@MXCF electrode exhibits outstanding electrochemical characteristics, including a capacity of 1441.

Multilayer Nanocarrier for the Codelivery of Interferons: A Promising Strategy for Biocompatible and Long-Acting Antiviral Treatment.

Pharmaceutics

October 2024

Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical Laboratory, Departamento de Fisiopatología, Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas, Universidad de Concepción, Víctor Lamas 1290, P.O. Box 160-C, Concepción 4030000, Chile.

Interferons (IFNs) are cytokines involved in the immune response with a synergistic regulatory effect on the immune response. They are therapeutics for various viral and proliferative conditions, with proven safety and efficacy. Their clinical application is challenging due to the molecules' size, degradation, and pharmacokinetics.
