Background And Aims: Syndecan-1 (SDC-1) is a member of the family of transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycans, which are involved in cell-cell adhesion and the interaction of cells with the extracellular matrix. Evidence suggests that loss of SDC-1 expression in several benign and malignant epithelial neoplasms is an unfavorable prognostic indicator, but its expression profile in thyroid gland neoplasms remains to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to evaluate SDC-1 expression in papillary carcinomas of the thyroid (PCT) that were both larger and smaller (papillary microcarcinoma) than 10mm, with or without extracapsular extension (PCT-E and PCT-NE).

Methods: The expression of SDC-1 was studied in 62 cases of PCT-E and PCT-NE using a tissue microarrays technique (TMA). SDC-1 positivity was predominantly observed in the cytoplasm of neoplastic epithelial cells and in the stroma of PCT.

Results: SDC-1 is expressed in both neoplastic epithelial cells and the stroma. It is more frequently expressed in PCT-E than PCT-NE (p=0.002) and the stromal expression of SDC-1 is more intense in PCT-E that are >10 mm (p=0.026).

Conclusions: The epithelial and stromal expression of SDC-1 observed in this series of PCT suggests that the expression of this protein may be related to extracapsular invasion.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between the changes in early degradation products of polysaccharide coatings (such as hyaluronic acid (HA), syndecan-1 (SDC-1), and heparan sulfate (HS)) and the development of organ dysfunction in sepsis patients. We conducted a retrospective analysis on 140 sepsis patients admitted from January 2021 to June 2022, who formed the study group; 100 healthy individuals who underwent health checks during the same period were included as the control group. The study found that the expression levels of HA, SDC-1, and HS upon admission and within 24 hours of admission in sepsis patients, as well as the early change rates, were positively correlated with organ dysfunction (P < 0.

Syndecan-1: a key player in health and disease.

Immunogenetics

December 2024

Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Physiological Sciences, American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon.

Article Synopsis
  • Syndecan-1 (SDC-1) is a key protein on epithelial cells that plays roles in cell adhesion, interactions with the extracellular matrix, cell cycle regulation, and lipid clearance.
  • Alterations in SDC-1 are linked to various diseases, highlighting its potential as a target for diagnosis and treatment, though many mechanisms behind its functions are still not well understood.
  • This review explores SDC-1's involvement in health and diseases like liver disorders, inflammation, infections, and cancer, aiming to outline future research avenues for targeted therapies and early diagnosis.

Background: Chronic periodontitis may induce erectile dysfunction (ED), however, the specific mechanism involved is unclear. The endothelial glycocalyx (eGlx) is a structure that can regulate endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) phosphorylation on the cavity surface of vessels.

Aim: To investigate whether chronic periodontitis leads to ED by affecting the eGlx.

In Sjögren's disease (SjD), the salivary glandular epithelial cells can induce the chemotaxis of B cells by secreting B-cell chemokines such as C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 13 (CXCL13). Syndecan-1 (SDC-1) is a major transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) predominantly expressed on epithelial cells that binds to and regulates heparan sulfate (HS)-binding molecules, including chemokines. We aimed to determine whether SDC-1 plays a role in the pathogenesis of SjD by acting on the binding of HS to B-cell chemokines.

Syndecan-1 as a predictor of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques.

Front Cell Dev Biol

August 2024

Institute of Biomedical Engineering, West China School of Basic Medical Sciences and Forensic Medicine, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiovascular disease, particularly atherosclerosis (AS), poses a significant global health issue, with vulnerable plaques directly linked to acute cardiovascular events, prompting the investigation of Syndecan-1 (SDC-1) and its role in plaque progression.
  • Using ApoE atherosclerosis mouse models, researchers found that mice on a high-fat diet and with partial carotid artery ligation exhibited the most severe plaque accumulation and vulnerability after 16 weeks, indicated by increased lipid/foam cells and specific proteins related to inflammation and tissue remodeling.
  • The study concluded that higher expression levels of SDC-1 in the atherosclerosis models were positively correlated with plaque vulnerability, positioning SDC-1 as a potential biomarker for assessing the severity
