Background: Cardiovascular diseases are accompanied by the presence of active oxygen species and organic free radical generation. The aim of this study was to examine the possibility of using malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified low-density lipoprotein (LDL) analyses as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker.

Design And Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological study of a random sample of the male population of Tallinn aged 20-64 was carried out in 2007-2008. A total of 413 subjects were included in the study. The screening procedure included standard epidemiological methods. Oxidative stress was assessed by measuring the kinetics of glutathione oxidation and the level of oxidized of MDA-modified LDL.

Results: A strong positive correlation between levels of MDA-modified LDL- and total cholesterol was indicated, as well as LDL-cholesterol in blood of patients with postinfarct cardiosclerosis (r=0.82 and r=0.83, respectively, p<0.05). Hypercholesterolemia and hyperglyceridemia were accompanied by significant increase in oxidized LDL plasma level.

Conclusion: MDA-modified LDL estimation has a diagnostic accuracy and may be used as an independent biochemical marker for atherosclerosis.

Background: Serum malondialdehyde-oxidized low-density lipoprotein (MDA-oxLDL) is associated with atherosclerosis and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Vascular calcification frequently occurs with arterial stiffness in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). This cross-sectional study aimed to elucidate the correlation between aortic stiffness and MDA-oxLDL levels in patients on PD.

Background: The function of olive oil polyphenols in suppressing the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is well-known in Europeans. However, it remains unclear whether olive oil polyphenols exert antioxidant effects in Japanese people.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine whether the ingestion of olive oil polyphenols suppresses LDL oxidation in the Japanese population and whether this effect depends on age.

Article Synopsis
  • Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) refers to a serious condition where the placenta attaches too deeply into the uterine wall, leading to complications like heavy bleeding and the need for hysterectomies, especially as cesarean rates rise.
  • This study focused on the Nrf2-Keap1 signaling pathway in PAS patients, measuring various biomarkers related to oxidative stress and antioxidant activity using the ELISA method.
  • The findings indicate significant differences in levels of Nrf2, Keap1, and related markers between PAS patients and a control group, suggesting that the pathway is disrupted in PAS and may help assess the severity of the condition.

Background: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is associated with angina symptoms and adverse clinical outcomes in patients without obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). Malondialdehyde-modified low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL) is reportedly a marker of the initiation and acceleration of epicardial coronary atherosclerosis. However, its impact on CMD remains unclear.

Background And Aims: The short-term (within 6 weeks) effects of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors on lipid plaques have not been adequately evaluated. We aimed to investigate whether a single dose of a PCSK9 inhibitor before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) could reduce the abundance of lipid-core plaques identified via near-infrared spectroscopy intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) at target lesions within a very short period.

Methods: This prospective, single-arm, single-center interventional study enrolled 27 consecutive patients with coronary artery disease.
