Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. The number of cases is increasing among young women, and consequently, breast reconstructions are performed more often. Postoperative complications, wound healing, and the quality of scars influence the final cosmetic outcomes.

Direct-to-implant and tissue expander-based immediate breast reconstruction in Chinese women: A comparison of surgical complications and patient-reported outcomes.

Background: Direct-to-implant (DTI) breast reconstruction restores patient body image immediately after mastectomy but may increase postoperative complications compared to tissue expander (TE)-based breast reconstruction. Few studies have compared the surgical complications and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of DTI and TE breast reconstructions in Asian women.

Method: This study compared postoperative complications and PROs between DTI and TE breast reconstruction in Chinese women and explores the risk factors of postoperative complications and the influencing factors of PROs.

Synthesis, characterization, and application potential of chitosan/acrylamide composite hydrogels as skin expanders.

J Mater Sci Mater Med

November 2024

Department of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery & Hand Microsurgery, Ningbo NO.6 Hospital, 1059 East Zhongshan Road, Ningbo, China.

Hydrogels are currently widely used in regenerative medicine and wound repair due to their superior biocompatibility, reliable mechanical strength, and good morphological memory. We aimed to prepare a self-expanding hydrogel that can be used as a skin expander for the repair of large soft skin tissue defects. Self-expanding hydrogels were prepared by chemical cross-linking, which consisted of water-soluble chitosan (CS), acrylamide (AM), methylene bisacrylamide (NMBA), etc.

Aim: Research studies with porcine acellular bladder matrix (PABM) showed integration of only small sized stamps in recipient bladders, however for clinical use in bladder augmentation significantly larger patches are needed. We hypothesised pre-vascularisation with omentum may be a step towards clinical translation.

Method: Eight domestic pigs were operated three times 8-10 weeks apart: 1-Implantation; PABM with recorded dimensions were sutured around a tissue expanding device, wrapped in omentum and sutured to the anterior abdominal wall.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of different sizes of forehead tissue expanders in improving reconstructive outcomes and minimizing donor site deformities following surgery.
  • It analyzed data from 79 patients who received either small (50/80 mL) or large (150/200 mL) expanders, finding no major demographic differences between the two groups.
  • Results indicated that larger expanders led to less frontal deformation and better overall reconstruction results, suggesting that larger expanders are preferable for forehead procedures.
