Over 10 years ago, research scientists in the federal department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) were alerted to the presence of high levels of cadmium, a toxic metal, in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) cultured in British Columbia (BC), Canada waters. This mini-review summarizes the most recent published studies on levels of cadmium in shellfish from the Pacific Northwest (BC and Washington State). Recent health risk assessments with respect to the ingestion of BC oysters are presented. The review concludes with a discussion on the ethical dilemma now facing the shellfish industry in the Pacific Northwest and provides recommendations for the culturing of shellfish without fear of high cadmium levels.

This study was conducted to evaluate the health risks related to eating crabs and periwinkles from Southern Nigerian coastal areas that are contaminated by crude oil. Periwinkles and crabs from contaminated locations were tested for Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and heavy metal (HM) levels using US-EPA standard, and the health risks to humans of eating these seafood were assessed. 20 samples of periwinkles and crabs were collected from crude oil-polluted coastal areas.

Higher concentrations of heavy metals were reported mainly among adult Asian persons compared to other racial/ethnic groups in earlier NHANES cycles' studies. We aimed to examine concentrations of metals among Asian children/adolescents compared to children/adolescents identifying with other racial/ethnic groups, considering socio-demographic factors and potential mediation by fish/shellfish consumption. Using NHANES data (2015-2018), 5293 participants (1-19 years) with blood/urinary measurements of lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic were included.

Evaluating the ecological quality and pollution status of coastal mudflats is crucial for environmental protection and management, particularly when these areas serve as major shellfish production hotspots. In this study, we assessed the benthic ecological quality and heavy metals pollution in Geligang, located in the Northern Bohai Sea using the macrobenthos diversity index and the heavy metal pollution index. The Shannon-Wiener index (H'), AZTI marine biotic index (AMBI), multivariate AMBI (M-AMBI) showed that the benthic ecological quality in Geligang is either good or high.
